I was downshifting today going into first gear and it ground two times before i was able to get it into gear. This is like the fourth time I have done it in like 3 months.

DID I HURT OR DAMAGE ANYTHING IN THE TRANNY?

Does grinding the gearing on accident periodically do anything to anyhting.

PLease give me opinions or factual data, thks tyler

GODDAMN I AM SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO PISSED

DUDE STOP you never downshift to first gear. first gear is only to start your car and getting it rolling....grinding your trans. over time might well mess up your trans. LOL..i don't know, I'm guessing, but you will not have a problem if you STOP downshifting into 1st....!!!!!!!!!!!!!.next time you slow down, put it in second...if your in second jus slow down while in second...if you feel the car shake or about to stall...jus press clutch in and put in netrual... :thumb:

you will get used to it and know how slow you can go in second or which gear to go into from neutral... ;)

ok well now i know, thks for the respnse, I guess i did not hurt anything because i have only done it couple of times, i think 4 since i owned the car which has been 4 months.

Any other opinions or facts are welcome.

there's no need to downshift into 1st. and you're probably hurting your trans everytime you do it.

just remember, dont ever force your car into gear.. if it doesn't slide into gear, there's a reason for it.

1st gear should only be used for a < 5mph roll start

well you say that I am hurting the trans every time i do it.

Ok, please explain how i am hurting it,

My question is, doing it like 4 times is or is not going to do damage that will EFFECT the performance of the trans.

My guess is that 1st gear in dsm's is not syncronized, correct?

First is synchronized, it's just not meant to be shifted into while moving at a decent rate of speed. The gear is too tall to just throw in from say 15-20 mph. I would never use 1st at anything over 5.

You can blow it with just ONE shift like that. You can and will damage it from doing that. My old 87 integra did this after the 50 mile mark. I thought I was going to third on an exit ramp and "forced" it in at about 20 mph. Needless to say my trans locked and the pedal slammed the floor. I then found out I was actually going to 1st. I know, I know, it was a stupid mistake. This was in 93.

The manual trans (most of all I have worked, driven, or riden in) have NEVER let at any time the car downshift into 1st gear while in motion unless the car was going 2-5mph. Even then I do not recommend it.

ok most of the time i was like 3 gran and in 2nd ......... did i hurt it this time is the question.

What i am saying is simply ........ it what is just ground the gear, this hurt anything. Because it was first was just because it was first, it ground like bad shift into 3-4-5.

Does a little grind HURT anything, thats all?

Yes a little grind does hurt. That grind is wear and tear on the part. That's a god awful noise to hear, does it sound like it's good? Basically don't do it anymore and you may get away with no problems at all. Do it too much and your tranny will stop staying in gear.

That is the point behind my question, since I have only done it like 4 times in like 4-5 months since I have owned the car, I do not think I have hurt it.

If it ground going into gear then yes, you have caused unreversible damage. The extent of that damage is yet to be seen. You may get away with no ill effects but nevertheless there is damage done. You may have take 10k miles off the synchro and gear each time you did it and it will be that much sooner before it needs to be replaced. Does that explain it?
