Now i looked and searched for info on this and i kinda understand what it does and how it works. But my question why do people have a SAFCII and also get a logger too? I thought the SAFCII is a logger or am i wrong? Im about to get one and i was wondering what else do i need to buy to tune my car beside a SAFCII?

Here are my mods for my 97 GSX: XS FMIC with piping, Greddy BOV, Walboro 255 with afpr, sbr manual boost controller, boost and a/f ratio guage, bezel for the guages, 3' dejon intake with filter, 3"turboback exhaust with hi-flo cat, SBR3500 clutch, rebuilt tranny, and new belts and gaskets for the engine. The rest are stock.

What im getting next is a 16g (with install kit), manifold and O2 housing with 680 injectors (for later upgrade to tbe 16g) and misc parts for the turbo.

My best bet is getting a SAFCII now to tune what i got and then upgrade to a DSMlink later on when i do my second upgrade.

As stated above...what else do i need to buy with the SAFCII to tune my car or is that all i need it?

The AFC has a monitor mode, but it is not a logger.

A logger would be ok and will teach you a lot of whats going on in your DSM.

I'm poisoned with the wideband and love it, but still play with a logger if i need to see timing.

So SAFCII is not a logger but do i need it to tune my car? or can just get a logger without getting the SAFC to tune my car?

Yes you will need it to tune your car. It allows you to make adjustments based upon corrections to the mas air signal.

************************************************************

The logger will read narrow band o2 sensor voltage and trim.

It will tell you timing.

Some can check the fuel pump, head lights, read codes, clear codes etc.

The logger can't really edit anything to the ECU.

the safc is a way for compensating if you have larger injectors(anything over 450cc) if you still have the stock injectors(blue tops) then an safc would not do you any good, except for monitoring(as stated above) once you get your fuel pump and 680's then I would get a wide band to monitor your a/f. dont turn up your boost without a propper tune!you dont want a mealtdown trust me! wait until you have adequete fuel supply. i personally would go get my car tuned on a dyno, and have some one tune for me, unless you are 100% comfortiable with tunning, trust me i learned the hard way.250 bucks for a good tune is alot better then 1500 for a new engine.hope this helps, fredo:dsm:

so i need a logger AND the AFC? so why do i keeo hearing ppl just using SAFC to tune there car? or they didnt mention that they have a logger.

alrite with all the mods i have listed in the thread, i was planning to raise my boost to 14-15 psi without SAFC with stock injectors and walboro 255 with AFPR from Aeromotive..do i have enough mods to do that and be safe without the tunning for now?

Anytime you add modifications to increase the airflow going into and out of your engine, you are increasing the chance that knock will occur.

The easiest way to monitor knock is with a datalogger, if you have a 1g the logger will show you the raw numbers from the knock sensor. If you have a 2g you would go by timing advance. If the timing is advancing, then the knock sensor is not detecting any knock. If the timing is not advancing or it is retarding, then the knock sensor is detecting knock.

The datalogger is for monitoring and recording data from the engine's sensors and it's REQUIRED, if you are going to modify your engine. The Safc intercepts the signal from your MAF sensor and alters it according to the changes you made to the settings, and then sends it to the ecu. No datalogging is posible with just the Safc.

Tuning with only a wideband is the easiest way to fry your engine, every good tuner has some way to detect knock.

With your modifications and the safc/datalogger combo you should be able to run 15 psi, if you're careful with the tuning.
