If I start moving from a complete stop and put the pedal to the floor there is a delay in response, from when the pedal is depressed and when the engine starts the gain rpm(its not turbo lag). Car is a 92 tsi awd with 2g maf

Are you an auto or 5spd? it doesnt say in your profile. in either case it could be you TPS or boost leak, If in fact your an auto that is normal until you start modding things for low end torque. If your a 5spd it could be a slipping clutch/tranny, bad spark/coil could also be an answer if it feels like a miss until high RPMs. A little more info would help

it is a 5 speed. I dont think it would be a boost leak because its happening before the turbo spools up. im pretty sure its not the clutch slipping either. its possible it might be the tps or coil, the car doesnt miss at high rpm either.

Tps's sometimes get dead spots in them it happened to my 2g it had a dead spot at like 3k and it would toss back and forthfrom 2800 too 3100/3200 when the car would try and go steady at 3k, i would test your tps first cause it could just be a bad one, if its was a coil/spark problem it would be a missfire, if it feels like a popping/jerking before spool up it could very well be faulty plugs/wires or coil but you can also test your coil also i believe theri are direction on www.VFAQ.com on testing the coil and tps if there not their anymore search on here their is a thread on it

Try checking your throttle cables.

We need a little more information here. I noticed you said you wired a 2g maf into your
1g. Does the car drive fine all other times? Do you still have the cruise control installed or did you elimiate it with a none cruise control throttle cable?? If you do still have cruise control, i would check the throttle cable there because sometimes you will get a lot of slack there. How long is the delay?

the car drives fine at all other times, i still have cruise control unit on the car

i dont have a stock 1g maf, when i bought the car it had an HKS maf on it and ive sold it since then

If the car drives fine and pulls fine i dont think it would be related to the MAF but somewhere between the gas pedal and the throttle plate. It could be a bad TPS but to me it sounds like its throttle cable related.

i have a similar problem with low speeds for example from stop to go if i give it a good punch between 1k and 3k its like i have normal movement as if i wasn't being aggressive, but once i get past 3k and hit oh say 3,800rpms i feel the pull again and get the jump in speed. But its only really between 1st and 2nd gears. i have normal response with downshifting and higher speeds.

i read all over the forums about throttle response and tps is everywhere, i know its related now. but..um...im a newbie right now :sosad: and don't know a lot of abbreviations. i saw link within DSM's site for abbreviations but "TPS" wasn't in it.

also i saw reference to the possibility of the clutch slipping, i have noticed that this response problem has been progressive and i have a '97 with its original clutch (new one in the mail) . so "WHAT IS TPS?" and how do i find it on my car, and what can i do to narrow down the possibilities of whats wrong with my GET UP AND GO!???

HELP!!!

TPS=Throttle Position Sensor (it's on the throttle body)
I wouldn't mess around with that at this point. What your describing just sounds like turbo lag. Some lag is normal but you may have factors which are exagerating it.
1) An exhaust leak before the turbocharger can cause this.
2) A boost leak will also affect response and power. This is an air leak in the intake tract. There are ways you can test for these leaks yourself. Learn to do this as this will be invaluable for as long as you own your car.
3) If your clutch is slipping when you hit the gas you will notice the rpm's shoot up but the car doesn't really accelerate. Usually there is a distinct smell when you park the car afterwards. Similar to overheating brakes yet unique. You'll know if it happens.

You might also want to start with some routine maintenance. Fresh plugs (NGK BPR6ES), new air filter, etc.

So do some searching on these things and if you have any questions let us know. The guys/gals on this site are very helpful. Also, if you start a new thread in the regular section of the new members forum you will probably get more responses.

Hope this helps.:thumb:

Oops.:coy: Sorry, I missed that Tammy. Like I said previously, if you start a new thread in the Newbie Forum you will get more responses. Hopefully some of the other N/T guys who have had similar problems can help you out.:)
