Hello all. I'm having a problem with my 98 eclipse gs and not really sure what to do now. I've read about every similar post on this forum and still not sure what's going on.

Ok here goes. The car was running just fine, turned on the heater to unfog the windows and my gf noticed sparks from behind the radio area. It was still running so I didn't think much of it. Was getting ready to leave and the car just died. So I tried restarting it and nothing. It cranks but the fuel pump isn't kicking on nor am I getting any spark. I then tried to hook up 2 code readers to it and both failed.

I pulled the radio because I heard a hum coming from behind it, it was the starter relay, pulled the clutch sensor plug and it went away until I tried my brakes, once again got the hum so I disconnected that as well for now. I've checked all the fuses and they are good BUT there is also a short somewhere as I'm getting power to ground. I know it's something to do with the lighting because my tail light, headlight relays were humming as well when I would turn them on so when I checked them with a test light sure enough they're shorting out somewhere.

Anyways I hunted down the connector behind the radio that was causing the short, now I just have to figure out which side of the connector the short is on.

My main question is could a short giving power to ground cause all these problems?

I pulled the ecu to check the caps but it's filled with a gel for protection but from what I could tell none of the caps are bad. This is my only vehicle right now and I need to get it started but don't know where to go from here.

Sorry for the long post, just giving detailed info in hopes that someone can help.

on the headlight, taill light and starter relays, 12v+ are supplied to one side of the activation coil and the other side is grounded by the headlight/taillight/clutch switch.

so there would have to be a short to ground on the wire going from the switch to the relay to activate it.

Ok, thx I'll take a look at it tommorow and see if I can find it. Hoping if I trace down this short then maybe this thing will turn over like its supposed to.

which connector was it? if you don't have a copy of the electrical manual, HERE is the link to download it. Page 62-67 of the pdf should help you ID the connector.

I'm not seeing it clearly on the list. It's mounted in the same area as the starter relay and door lock relay behind the radio . There's 4 connectors to the left of those 2 relays, I'm assuming to make it easier to run wires on the interior and then clip in to the main harness. Anyways out of those 4 connectors it would be the left most connector, it's an 18 pin connector. I will have to move it in a little bit so I will try and snap a pic real quick when I do.

like the 2 blue plugs, a black plug and a white plug? if thats correct, is it the white plug?

that connector is c-22. it seems to mostly go to the gauges. here is what i could find in the manual. it also is used for the auto tranny ecu which i didn't include since your MT.
