So I start the car up to take it for a test drive. Put it in reverse, feels normal. Start slipping out the clutch and the car moves forward! All the other gears work great and engage good. However, there is also a rattling that has a metallic sound to it. It sounds kind of like scraping, doesn't matter if the clutch is in or out, what gear it's in, nothing. Shifter cables are hooked up right, nothing is loose. I even manually put the levers on the trans into the reverse position, and it does the same thing.

I also have a big oil leak on the vc, but that isn't as big of an issue as this. I would like to start daily-ing the car asap, but this shit is holding me back. Any and all input is welcome!

Give a little more background on the problem. Has it always been like this or did this happen after you put the car back together?

The tranny has always been just fine. I pulled the trans out after my clutch went out, I cleaned it, then let it sit in my garage untill just recently when I put it back together. Nothing internal should be broke because I didn't do anything to it besides clean it.

I'm in a 90 Laser RST btw.

Rattling in all conditions and NO reverse would lead me to think its the reverse idler gear, but the fact that it moves forward in reverse isn's addressed in that issue. I don't have much hands on experience with DSM transmissions but I don't know what else it could be or why it would be an issue after a simple remove and replace. Before anything I would definitely re-check the shift cables. Good luck!

Reverse works now I guess. All I did was unhook the cables under the hood completely, only then could I manually put it in reverse under the hood. Hooked the cables back up and test drove it, all seems well now.

I'm going to swap turbos back to my 14b cause the 16g is junk shit. I'm hoping thats all my problem is. Otherwise it might be the starter too. Gotta drop the damn pan too. :(

Thanks. It's impossible to mix up the cables. I left the trans in gear when I pulled it, so I'm sure when I hooked it back up the adjustment was a bit off. They only go on one way. It's all good now though.
