Did the 1994 eclipse base model come with power steering? My car doesnt have it, but it looks like it should. For instance, I can see where the power steering pump mounts, and I can see an unused pulley in the drivebelt area. I do not see any power steering lines and I cannot see anywhere on the rack and pinion where I would connect power steering lines. I have a manual for the car (generic chilton-type manual) and it shows pictures of where the power steering lines are and all that good stuff. I cannot find anywhere to connect any lines. I want to fix the power steering in the car. Did the car ever have it? Any information on this would be great.

BTW I searched for this topic for about an hour and a half before I posted anything.

thanks for the quick reply Rob!

so would it be safe to assume that mine didnt? I mean, hte mount for the pump is definitely there and ther is a completely unused pulley adjacent to where the pump *would* be. If it came off the line without power steering, wouldn't they leave those parts (or at very least the unused pulley) off as well? I guess my question is this: Is there any way to tell if my car should have (was built with) power steering?

i think he's talking about the crank pulley they would leave it there since the whole crank pulley is one piece. the ps bracket also mounts some other stuff so its cheaper if they just make one since most of them had ps.

I'll try to take a picture of it tomorrow maybe. The pulley I am talking about is part of two connected pulleys. The inside pulley is connected to a serpentine belt that goes down to the crankshaft pulley. The unused pulley is outside that one. It is a pulley for a v-belt and nothing is connected to it. It does not go to the A/C, the A/C is connected and works fine. It is further forward than that one. I wish I had a picture, it would be a hell of a lot better than my weak explanation.

aha! Thats the answer I was expecting. First of all, you are right about the pulley. And now I see why they would not go to the trouble of casting two different ones. I also see (on further inspection) that the PS mount connects to other stuff and is probably also cheaper to be mass-produced that way. I kind of expected this, so I think that is the answer right there.

On to my next question (annoying little bastard arent I?). Since the car did NOT come with PS and some of the same model car DID come with PS... could I replace the rack and pinion, but the PS lines, and the pump ad reservoir, mount it all on there and have power steering? I might be able to junkyard all those parts and it might be worth all the work and trouble and money LOL... Just a thought.

Would have been nice to know that you were refering to the crankshaft pulley before I made an ass of myself. Of course I should have thought it through as well.

sorry JR. If you read my post right after yours I wasnt sure that it was the crank pulley either. I didnt look closely enough when i was actually looking at the car and it is too dark now. Thanks for your help, I didnt think you were an ass at all. If anyone I am the ass for not knowing that in the first place :D

I wonder if you can notice the difference in power between one /w power steering and one without it. Personally i would rather have the power steering then a few extra horses.

+1

its a 1.8... it diesnt have a whole lot of power to begin with. I'm not concerned with how fast or powerful the car is, but I would really like power steering. The car is really hard to maneuver at 0-15mph. Above that it isnt a problem. I have a friend with a 1990 talon 2.0 DOHC that doesnt run. Could I use the rack and pinion and the PS pump and lines from his car? Are all the parts the same as in the 1.8? I might actually pick up his whole car for pretty cheap. At least I would have an extra part or two.
