No first gear

My friends car is acting up. It's a 95 gst w/ 7 bolt 6 puck racing clutch and stock trans. First gear from a stop wont go it sounds as if the gears slide out of position. However if the revs are matched while downshifting you can get it to roll in first when you are already moving. Does anyone know what would be wrong with a situation like this? Other than just buying a gear box and replacing first gear is there anything he can do/try?

I had same prob about a month ago, tore it all apart and had to go in and re-shim stuff. Worked for about a week and a half, and now 2nd is doing the same thing... Anyone know about our probs?
