Ok i have had my cat off before and i always threw a cel. I had the cat on for emissions and a few drag stip passed to get my 12 second 100% street legal car. Anyway i took it off today so i can run race gas tomorrow and i drove it around for 30min and no cel. Its cool and all but kinda scary? So whats up.

I don't have a DSM but when mine came off, it didn't throw a CEL till like a year later.

dunno if that's any help but I tried LOL

I would be happy, mine fell off causing my O2's to get messed up so now I need new O2's and a CAT.

mine is weird, i had my cat off for about a year and a half..it threw the light obviously but now my cat is back on and my CEL is on about 90% of the time..sometimes ill go somewhere with no light and it makes me happy...but then once i shut the car off and turn it back on i get the light again  LOL

I had no cat for about a year, then the CEL came on. I got it turned off and it didn't come back on. I'm now running a cat, with no CEL.

I didn't have a cat for 2 years and never got a CEL (well at least not because of a missing cat  )

Your car will not throw a CEL for no cat by the way. There is no 2nd O2 sensor on 1G's. And if my ECU is reset it sometimes takes a few weeks for it to come back on.

2gs dont throw a code with out a cat. I have had 3 2gs and I put test pipes on all of them with no code ever.

Well I have spent a total of $80 (2 trips) to check my light due to no cat. Each time they told me I have a bad cat and it needs to be replaced. (I dont have a cat though) My light is always on, and now I have the convienience of having my neighbor check it and every time its the same situation. :thumb:

Yeah that's why there's not just one code for cat related issues, there's 4.

P0420 Catalyst system efficiency below threshold (Bank 1)
P0421 Catalyst system efficiency below threshold (Bank 1)
P0430 Catalyst system efficiency below threshold (Bank 2)
P0431 Catalyst system efficiency below threshold (Bank 2)

So as for you with no CEL from test pipes, let me ask you this. What is the purpose of the 2nd O2 sensor then? Why is it conveniently located right behind the cat? It's one and only purpose in life is to judge whether the cat is working or not. 1G's do not have cat codes because they have no secondary O2 sensor.

I know, this is dumb reply but maybe you should check to see if you even have a CEL bulb...I've owned two DSM's that someone yanked the bulb from behind the instrument panel just so you wouldn't know if it had a real problem when I bought it. I bought new bulbs for them and sure enough, the CEL was on all the time. You can check to see if the bulb is in there (or no burned out) by turning ur ignition to the ON position and seeing if it lights up for about five seconds. If it doesn't, get your bulb replaced. If it does then look at the other's posts... GL :thumb:

I put a screw in CEL defender built for a Gti...which is nothing more than a screw in spacer with some catalyst material and ive never had a check engine light...my check engine light only came on once and that was because i didnt have enough check valves on my map sensor but thats not a problem you factory turbo guys have...but you guys that are getting the light you should look into this defender it was only like $20

i gutted my cat and it took a few days for the cel to come on, its designed to give it some time before throwing the code, but whoever said it doesnt happen is wrong. that 2nd o2 sensor exists for cat testing purposes alone. if your not getting one on a 2g after a testpupe or cat gutting either your o2 sensor is broke, your cel is broke, or your car is just mystically super clean :)

I used to get it from time to time. Mostly when I was cruising 55-65mph on the highway.
yeh, most of the time you'll get it when you are at a steady speed on the highway. i haven't poped one yet after about a month of resetting the ecu.

I tested my cat with inlet temp and outlet temp and heated the cat to operating temp. and the cat failed and no code is being thrown and I'm trying to figure out why it hasn't thrown a code yet. The outlet is supposed to be 100 degrees hotter then the inlet but the inlet is hotter by 70 degrees so it's opposite and its not 100 degrees apart. WHY???????????
