Hello everyone, I have the mitsu 8 piece stock infinity system (6.5's in the front) and I am replacing JUST my front speakers, since one of them blew (keeping stock amp and stock HU). I have done a lot of research (since I knew nothing about car audio), but I am still confused and hope that you guys could help me with some of my options. 1) I was recommended These for replacement speakers. I then got to thinking that I would prefer more bass up front (I guess this is called "mid-range bass", so I researched some more and came up with These
, These -they say 6 3/4; however, crutchfield, KICKER, and sounddomain say they are 6.5's.

Now, am I heading in the right direction with the midrange bass speakers instead of the infinity references if I am looking for more bass, or am I just wasting extra time and money because the stock amp + HU need to be changed to see any difference? Second, does anyone have midrange speakers in there front doors? Does it sound ok with the stock amp/HU? Third, do I need a crossover for the sub/dash speakers? Or does the stock amp have an internal crossover that does this already? I have been told to go by user reviews, but I really cannot find any substantial sources, and there are not many car audio places around my area. Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

i replaced all my speaker in my car(except tweaters) with kenwood's. i have 5-1/4 in the door i think in my 2g and the 6-1/2 in the back where i think your 6x9s go. i added two 6x9s in a box in the back for sound and a little xtra bass until subs but i can feel those 5-1/4s on my leg just fine. i think if you buy some high quality speaker for like 70 bucks replace both off them and call it a day. if you want more bass just give those 6x9s some more power by fading to the rear. good luck

To get the best sound for the least amount of money out of those speakers, i'd upgrade the head unit. even like a cheap sony xplod would work good.:thumb: my brother has that and you can tune it for good bass.

viperlp01: Your setup sounds nice! I definitely wanna spend 70-1xx dollars on speakers, what is your opinion on the midrange/midbass speakers (edit: Can they even be hooked up to the stock speaker wires?)? Do you think they would sound funny, or be a nice complement to the dash speakers of the infinity system? Should I stay with something like a 2-3 way speaker instead? The problem is I could afford both types, just wondering how each type would do with the stock components. Thanks again for your help though.

RedEclipse17: Thanks for the info, unfortunately I am just installing new front speakers now.

YiNYaNg: Are you talking about the midbass speakers?

I have the Infinity Reference 6.5s in the front and 6X9s in the rear. The front speakers deffinitely give you tight mid-range bass enough for you to be pleased I'm sure. The 6X9s hit harder and give you lower bass, but the precision of the Infinity 6.5s is very impressive. In my opinion I would not substitute clarity and get the Infinitys, if you want more bass in the future just buy a cheap subwoofer! :thumb:

THANKS! However, I am thinking about putting in cdt cl6's into my front speakers...they are midbass drivers. Would I need a crossover for this or is it just plug and play? This would be on the stock amp. CDT M6's would be over kill for the stock amp right? The guy over at woofersetc told me cdts were pretty much the way to go if I wanted more midbass...

Well here's my experience over the years of doing sound system competitions. Currently I run a set of kenwood 3 way 6.5 in front and kenwood 2 way 6x9 in the back. I have most of the bass tuned out of them with my pioneer headunit and I have a set of Rockford punch Stage 3 12inch subs pushed with a 2400watt rockford amp.

I would say that if you want to run a set of aftermarket speakers with a stock HU, you will notice more clarity, but you have to remember that the stock HU and the amplifier located under your seat will not do a whole lot more in the bass department. Usually you want to get a set of speakers for more midrange and high freq and use subs for low freq. Most likely if you try to push too much bass out of a set of 6.5 or 6x9 you speakers will reach the limit of how low they can push and "bottom out." The speakers are an easy positive negative hookup you can either cut the old harness and splice or if you get speakers off of crutchfield you can get the harness for free usually. I would say a crossover probably won't be needed it sounds like how you want it setup that you don't need much more than the bass and treble tuning already available on the headunit, but if you do go aftermarket get a headunit with a seperate subwoofer out that way you can always lower the bass on the speakers and still tune for the lows in the subs, but make sure to do as much tuning as u can on the amp and let the amp do the work instead of turning up the bass on the headunit for the subs.

I would say if your looking for a little extra bass, new speakers may help you achieve that, but if your looking for a lot more bass, spend the extra money on a headunit, speakers and a set of subs, you'd be surprised on how much you can get out of a hatchback with just 1 10inch subwoofer. Good Luck:rocks:

hey bro i think they can actually yes they can all you need to do is take off the door and unhook the stocks and just hook up the aftermarkets. im looking a 2 kicker comp cvr(last years model) 10s in the back with an audiobahn amp. my freind had this setup in his saturn and it was nice ass hell. it should be no problem hooking up those aftermarkets though. good luck bro

Yeah those speakers should deffinitely be plug and play. You won't need a crossover for that set-up, because it will only complicate more. Since you don't have a subwoofer you can regulate how much bass goes to the speakers from the HU and not really worry about putting too much or too little. I agree that the stock Infinity system in our cars is very nice, but an upgraded HU can make all the difference in your system!

Thanks a lot for your help guys, it means a lot to, esp. since I don't know much about car audio at all. I am assuming you are OK'ing the CDT midbass drivers. Thanks again, you guys rock.

a crossover and new speakers are good but the new head unit will probably get you the best sound quality even with the factory speakers (well not if its blown like you said) but my headunit has a built in crossover in it and it was only 150 dollars at best buy. The Infinity system is nice but its still factory and distorts at the louder volumes. Go aftermarket headunit and i promise it will take care of all your issues.

You have to remember that the factor infinity amp is only built for the factory speakers, if you just start replacing speakers you could damage the amp because most of the new speakers you install will run at a lower ohm-age than factory. Even if you don't damage your factor amp, running too low of ohms increases the wattage. Unless that factory amp is designed to be 2 or 4 ohm stable this increase in wattage makes your output unstable, promoting distortion, and resulting in speaker damage. Hooking up to the factory amp with an aftermarket deck has a similar effect, because you changing the high pass inputs from somewhere around 4 watts to around 45-55 watts (depending on your deck)

Best thing to do is replace the factory head unit and run new wires for the speakers. I too have been doing car audio comps and installs for years, the other methods above will work, but I say if your going to upgrade, do it right. Polk audio have some of the best speakers for their unit price, and the high end Alpine decks have several of the most advanced crossover/EQ's out today, if your not so much into EXTREAM fine tuning (and your looking for something cheaper) I'd get a Kenwood Exelon deck.

Here is good forum and website if you'd like to learn more about car audio:

Hope this helps!!!

i replaced my front and rear speakers and unhooked the speakers on the dash with cheap walmart speakers and it sounds pretty nice with the factory head unit. I have the infinity sound system factory in my car but the replacements sound pretty nice with factory amp.

I was running 3200 Watts RMS into 1 ohm for both 15's. I wanna put 2 Audiobahn AW1208T in my GSX with that same amp. But right now my eclipse has a rod knock so I'll need a new engine before I get subs :p
