i installed Accel's Thundersport wires and put in some NGK BPR7ES plugs in my car. my low end response seems a little better but the top end seems weak. i gapped my plugs at .29 then put them at .32 like the plugs before. It didn't change it much, but didn't make it worse. i checked the resistance of each wire before i installed them. they are as follows from shortest wire to longest (this is overall resistance, not ohms/ft).

1 - 179.6
2 - 277
3 - 327
4 - 353

the old wires were...

1 - 6.28k
2 - 6.50k
3 - 7.55k (yes i double checked this reading)
4 - 7.00k

could the huge change in resistance be affecting my top end? also i read this thread... http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=186069&page=2&pp=25&highlight=spark+plug+gap

am i using the wrong plugs? any advice, suggestions will be appreciated.

Yes, BPR6ES @ .028. Also make sure the wires are in the right order. From left to right, head = 4321 and the coils = 4123.

yes i am on the stock turbo, and i WILL get the bpr6es's and save the bpr7es for later. yep my wires are in order. When will i need the bpr7es plugs? i do plan on upgrading the turbo after i do alot of learning/tuning/upgrading and everything else is ready to handle it. my goal is to be able reach a full boost of 20 psi by 3000 rpm.

oh and thanks alot

After a turbo upgrade and supporting mods when you can run more than 15 PSI daily is a good point to upgrade the plugs. I really doubt just the 7's is your problem right now, though. Like oldman suggested, my first thought was plug wires out of order.

Well I got the new(correct) plugs today and I'll double check my wire order. Once they're in I will have one less thing that could be a problem. Once I verify my wires are in order, what would be my next check?

I'll keep reading old posts and asking questions, thanks for all the help.

That all depend on what you meant by this.

my low end response seems a little better but the top end seems weak.
try and give us more details, seems weak is much too vague.

Thanks Oldman for looking at my thread.

I've since replaced the 7's with 6's and gapped them to 28 as suggested. I double checked each wire and they were in order. The car's power is better than before now.

I was referring to the RPM range earlier. At less than 3000 rpm the throttle response increased a little and it idled better, but at about 4000 and up it felt like it lossed some torque.

Here is a pic of the 7's that were in it only a few days. it looks to me that it wasn't igniting the cylinder properly

1. What's the vacuum reading?

2. Are you saying the car sputters at upper RPMs or just no power? Is it also related to psi or just rpm?

3. Did the problem just started after you change the wires? Were you running better with the old plugs and wires? Anything else done to the car lately?

4. Check and make sure the timing marks are lined up, any lifter ticks?

5. Check your base ignition timing.

6. A logger would be very useful for troubleshooting a problem like this.

1. Vacuum on the boost guage is 20in/mg, 21 when its warm

2. It sputters at idle, it had no power at the upper RPM's, but it's back and better with the BPR6ES plugs.

3. Yes it started when I changed plugs to the BPR7ES, but now that the BPR6ES are in it runs better than before I put in the BPR7ES. it did run better overall with the old plugs, but not as good as the BPR6ES. i did remove all vacuum lines except for the FPR lines last week. EGR was blocked off the week before. the power loss didn't occur I put in the BPR7ES.

4. The timing marks on the CAM sprockets?

5. I was planning on checking timing tomorrow, after I replace the leaking seal on the CAS. I have been getting some ticks. its loud when cold then goes away. sometimes i hear again when driving at a constant speed.

6. I want a logger and I will get one, soon as I buy three halloween costumes, provide for a birthday, a highchair, a forward facing car seat, and pay the mortgage. man I should have bought a DSM when I was 20 :thumb:

So the only problem left is idle surge? If so, I would check all the usual suspects, base timing, tps, isc...etc. And yes, make sure the cams are lined up in TDC.

Palm 100 - $30 ebay
mmcd - free
cable - $15

about $30 ok i'll look. i was expecting more like $150.

yeah that is whats left of the problems i'm dealing with right now. did i mention that i'm trying to figure out where i'm loosing oil? it's not on the ground. but I think that i should start another thread for that after I do the boost leak check that I've seen you suggest to several other people.

Thanks again

You're welcome, pm me a link to your new thread and I'll take a look. Good luck.
