A couple weeks ago i started hearing a noise in 4th and 5th gears when i would let off the gas on the highway, then it started doing it with the gas on or off....its like a grinding noise that doesnt stay constent it sounds like something rubbing in the wheel well to be honest but its not...it then started to happen in 2nd thru 4th...after like 3000 rpms...i mostly hear it if i run up to like 5 or 6k rpms and let off the gas and let it run back down the rpms w/o shifting...it grinds and stops...grinds and stops...so its not constant grinding...its weird..i took a guy out who knows alot about trannys and he said it was the ....._____ shaft....the main shaft in the tranny i forget what it was he said...but the main shaft of the transmission...and he told me i would need to replace the whole tranny....has anyone else had this happen to them...and should i go with a new tranny or rebuilt...and where in cali would i find one...and for about how much would it bee or a new vs rebuilt....thanks

I would have the half shafts pulled and inspected. I don't think its a tranny problem from what your explaining. I just replaced some half shafts in a 2G GS that sounded like what your describing. Those you can get at any automotive store.

i had the same problem with my 95 gst, but the noise in mine got faster as the rpms went higher i wasnt really sure what it was so i figure if i gave it a lil gas that it would go away, well needless to say i was wrong when i gave it gas the whole tranny exploded, i ended up having it towed to a local transmission shop. if your tranny does happen to go out and there still are parts that can be used i would say have it just rebuilt that would be the cheapest! but in my case there was nothing to salvage everything was destroyed i had to have a new one put in....also while i had it out i went ahead and threw in a quaife lsd.......goodluck i hope u dont go through the same BS i did!!!!
