New to DSM's Need some questions answered.

Just bought a TSI AWD and have a few specific questions.

1. Do I not need an MAF? Some intakes say (no maf) so do I not need one of these? thought it was important.

2. Is this a decent upgrade path?

NGK BP7ES plugs
K&N Filter FIPK
1g BOV
HKS or similiar universal muffler
RRE Upper Intercooler Pipe
2 1/2" High flow cat + piping
Some form of FMIC

3. Brings me to my next point, what is the deal with FMIC's is there a decently priced one? Can't find any for less then 600$ (when pricing in canadian)

4. Are the free mods a good idea?

i.e

2g Waste Gate Solenoid Restriction Removal
Open up I/C inlet
Remove BOV dump tube

5. Brings me to my next question, VFAQ doesn't have working links anymore, are there any decent guides to the free mods?

your upgrade path is going good... but for the fmic... if you are on a stock turbo its not recomended

as for the dump tube... its not recomended unless your running speed density or a gm maf and translator, since if you just remove your recirculation tube, your car will run rich....!!!

also for the spark plugs... you should go with the 6 not the 7...!!!

YOU SHOULD ALSO BE LOOKING AT PERFORMING A BOOST LEAK TEST... YOU CAN MAKE ONE FROM YOUR LOCAL HOME DEPOT... NO MORE THAN 2 BUCKS... IT WILL CHECK FOR BOOST LEAKS THROUGHOUT YOUR WHOLE TURBO SYSTEM... IF LEAKS ARE FOUND IT IS RECOMENDED THAT YOU FIX THE LEAKS... I don't think he meant completely cutting off the bov tube. I wouldn't even consider that being a mod at all. I'm pretty sure what he meant was the tube that extends into the intake. Cut the BOV dump tube on your DSM (2G)

Car is a 1998 Talon TSI AWD with 150,000km on it, everything stock including stereo . Got lots of work to do, picked it up for 5g. I will have to do that BOV dump mod, seems easy.

These cars are old. Preventative maintnance is the key. There is an upgrade path on the forum if you want some answers.

To answer your 1st question, yes you need a MAF. The intakes that say 'no maf' are for people that are either running blowthrough(which is when you have a GM MAF and a MAF-T and put the MAF in the I/C pipe), or speed density. But def like every one said, do your maintenences before you even begin to think about upgrades.
