New rear rotors needed, possibly new pads as well.

Good afternoon all,

I have a '98 Talon TSi FWD and I apparently need new rear rotors: the cars shakes when stopping and not from ABS.

I was hoping that someone here could recommend something for me. I never take the care to the track, but I would like something with better than stock braking performance. I was looking at the slotted rotors that I've seen on some of the DSM parts sites, but I honestly have no idea what's what.

I was also wondering if I should replace the pads at the same time, I see a lot of people recommending the EBC Greenstuff pads. Speaking of replacement, whether this would be a good first project to undertake myself. If so, is there anything in particular people would recommend buying? A 1 Ton jack for example?

Thank you.

As far as rear rotors and pads go I have taken my car to the track and autox and the stock rotors and pads are just fine. You have to remember when braking 80-85% of the fluid pressure is going to the front rotors not the rear. They do this because all of the weight of the vehicle is wanting to go forward. I would recommend slotted front rotors with some good ceramic pads and SS brake lines if you want better braking. But as far as rears go I always use stock ones we get here at NAPA and never had a problem. Just get some good pads for the rear and new stock rotors if you are worried about it though.

if you have limited track days i would suggest oem rotors with the ebc greenstuff and braided lines. pads and line upgrades on the front as well. also how do you know you need rotors? unless they got eaten up by not replacing the pads soon enough check this site for some good info

also a basic set of tools, 2 ton jack and jack stands

That link is excellent and fits what I have been experiencing to a T.

Any preferred online vendor for the pads?

Thanks again!

The jack stands aren't *necessary* if you're just doing brakes, but you'll want them if you EVER plan to work under the car.

Feel your rotors (when cold) for scratching or dips. Anything that would cause shaking of any sort should be obvious. You don't necessarily have to replace the rotors either. Turning them will give you a smooth surface.

What makes you think that the shaking originates from the rear?

This probably won't help. You can have some horrendous ridges that don't effect the efficiency of the brakes, and simply turning the rotors may only temporarily cure a problem caused by runout.

The process of "turning" or "cutting" the rotors is falling out of favor with competant shops as a panacea for brake pulsing. At one time it was served up like fries with a combo meal to cut down on returns. The new technology requires turning the rotors on the vehicle. This will correct runout regardless if it originates from the hub, the rotor, or a stack-up of tolerances.

Dmowb, this is probably more information than you wanted. Back to your basic questions; brakes rotors are not that difficult to work on but expect them to be stuck. I'm sure you can find threads on freeing stuck rotors. It sounds like this is one of your first projects. If you plan to do more, invest in a decent floor jack and stands.
