New/modified j-pipe...am I ok?

After two phone conversations with an eBay shop to make sure I was getting what I needed, I bought an inexpensive j-pipe to replace my old one.

Long story short, it isn't even close to what I need. It doesn't come straight down by the roll stopper as I was told...in fact it sits almost inline with the compressor inlet...so I'm not sure how you would ever run an intake if this is supposed to fit a 1G.

Anyway, I cut the flange off and after a couple of hours of metal work 101, I have it modified and tacked to where I need it. My question is, is the flange angle too sharp now and will it cause flow problems? My gut instinct tells me it is ok, but I don't know how critical a change of direction coming out of the compressor is. It's not a 90* turn or anything drastic, but it is definitely not a perfect transition.

Your still awake too?

There's a silly qestion if I ever heard one. LOL

...I don't think that j pipe is for a dsm or I've never seen one take the angle ????

Yeah... I got hosed. Anyway, think I'll be ok with re-welding where I did?

It looks pretty nice sitting next to those shiny IC pipes...did you ever get all the Mother's off you? :D

That's the pipe I used on my 1G FWD for a while with the Supra side mount. I've since stepped up to a RRE j-pipe that is the same bend, it just has larger piping.

That pipe is for a car with a side mount intercooler, not a front mount intercooler. You need one like this:

thats definitely a j-pipe made for a sidemount. But I've owned 2 of those and I just run the fmic piping back and get a bending reducer to make it work. It's not that hard to deal with at all. But since you're already cut it you might as well finish it up. No big deal with the air flow I think.

My gut instinct tells me that j-pipe will hurt performance of that 16g.

There's really only one way to find out.

Oh, and on another note bud, you get what you pay for...

True...I'll probably run it during break-in and see if I notice a difference. It's not an abrupt change in direction, so I'm hoping it's not a choke point.

Yeah yeah...I know. :ohdamn:

After actually talking to the guy twice on the phone and based on the way the conversations went...I figured the shop was straight up. But besides not fitting anywhere near the way he said it would, the flange bolt holes and flow cutout don't even line up with the gasket he sent. :|

I like the looks of that one from arctic-racing that Justin posted up...don't see a link on the site to buy one though.

Ill be another to say that the Jpipe shown by the OP IS for DSMs, however as already mentioned its for routing to the stock SMIC location.

That ebay product is not crap, it works well for applications who need it.

I understand it's for the SMIC...my complaint is that I was told otherwise. And regardless of that, it is crap IMHO; I would prefer that the opening in the flange for the turbo outlet and the bolt holes to at least line up with the gasket whether it's for an FMIC or SMIC. And of course a properly-sized round hole (rather than an ellipse) would be nice...but maybe that's just me. :)

Live and learn.... so anyone got a good lead on a decent FMIC j-pipe? LOL

What's the diameter of the pipe that you want it to lead to? ETS makes some nice ones that a few people are using with good results:

ETS J-pipe 1
ETS J-pipe 2

You most likely would want the second one to work with your existing intercooler pipes. The second one kinda just rolls over the compressor housing straight down to the ground. From there it would just be a 90 degree bend to your existing pipes.

Found one more from Dejon. Can't direct link with them, but it is under: 1st Generation, Frontmount IC and the second major box down. With this one, you can have it go to a 2.5" outlet (facing down still) so you can just to a regular old 90 degree elbow instead of a reducing elbow which are more expensive.

I think the ETS one may be a little smaller then 2.0". Let me check on that.

Edit: Nope, it's 2" as well.
