I am in the process of overhauling my entire motor(6 Bolt) because my rings froze up. When I bought the motor I was told it had 9.0:1 Wiseco pistons in it. They definitely are Wisecos. They were shot so I bought a set of 9.0:1 Manley pistons.
I get the Manley set and notice that the relief for the valves are much more shallow. I put the pistons in and just lay the head on top to turn it over and check everything. The valves hit the pistons and lift the head about 1/8"!!!!
I have no idea what is going on. All I changed was pistons brand. Keep the Eagle rods and stock crank.
I don't know if Extreme PSI sent me the wrong pistons or what but I'm stumped.

If anyone has any suggestions I should check to figure out whats going on it would help greatly.

I'm gonna call Extreme PSI on Monday and ask them about the pistons.

The Wiseco part number is 6560M855. I looked it up on their site and it matched the closest with their 9.0:1 .020 over bore kit. Which is the exact same pistons that I have here from Manley. What would cause them to be so different?

I attached two pictures to show what I mean. The dirty ones are the Wisecos. And the clean ones are the Manleys.

If you had the head just laying on there you must not have had it timed? These ARE interference engines, and the pistons will hit the valves if not in proper phase with the cams.

did you even have your timing belt on and timed when you turned the crank?? Just because theres valve reliefs doesnt meen pistons wont hit valves especially just free-spinning the crank.

Yes I did. Sorry I did not specify that completely. It was put together. i just did not torque everything down completely. But timing belt was on. And it is still hitting.

The question would be did he have the cams installed on the head. Interference means the valve and piston occupy the same space at a different time. Another words when the valve is open the piston is down. When the piston is up the valve is up. If he didn't have the cams installed on the head he could check piston to valve clearance at top dead center.

If your cams where installed then yeah they will hit unless timed.

Sorry at work and delayed post.

Take the cams out if you question whether or not you timed it wrong.
As a vendor it would be hard to argue the timing was off if all the valves where closed and it still hit.

did you have a HG installed? (even the old one?)

if you did not you brought the valves .040 or so closer to the pistons.

do you have stock or aftermarket cams?

If the gasket wasn't on and the head wasn't trq'd down then your not gettin a accurate reading. If your head will move 1/8" then theres no way the timing is correct. Everything has to be good and tight for the timing to be and stay correct.

Intake reliefs are larger than the exhaust reliefs. It's hard to tell from the pic, but it looks like the reliefs are the same size on the manley's.

I completely forgot about this thread. But I didn't clearly state that it was in time and everything in check. I ended up pulling the bottom end apart again, took the crank to a machine shop only to find out that it is a 100mm stroker crank. I had no idea because I was not informed of this when i bought the motor. Extreme psi sent me pistons for a stock lenght crank. That's why I was having the problem I did.
But thanks for replies.
Guess i came out lucky..
