hey all. i just recently bought a 92 talon tsi awd. It has an engine but even i know its not worth saving. I called the only dsm store ive ever bought from and they didnt really help*snif snif* LOL. I was refered to slowboy to buy a new long block but i wanted to get some "real world" advice from people who have shopped with them. some people i know around here have not had good things to say, and have seen some not so good reviews. So before i send my car to them to get put back togeather LOL id like some feed back, and maybe advice on where to send my car. I know nothing about dsm's and the last one i had i tried to fix myself i fought for 8 months before paying someone to fix it. darn vac lines LOL. basicly im tryin to figure out if its worth fixing or if i should just sell or trash it. Ive got about a 3500 dollar budget to get it running. thanks

Well here is my 2 cents for what its worth. I think that since you plan on having someone do all your work for you and you said you have about 3500 to spend, I would just sell the car you have now and buy one that is already running. It will probably run you 2500 or more to have someone put a new engine in for you and your car is bone stock . If you sell your car and buy a running one you will be further ahead and have more money to do whatever mods you want. Again just me 2 cents!

3500.00 to get it running would be very nice if you knew exactly what to replace. Now for someone that knows what to fix could probably fix it for much less and have money left over. If you dont quite know how to fix it you will possibly end up spending more money by guessing what the problem is. Either way if YOU want to fix it yourself what better way to learn? Selling it and buying one with less problems is also a good option. You also have tons of people to help you out right here.

I replaced the engine in my talon in 2002. I did all the work myself and had about $2500 into a rebuilt engine and replacement of hoses, clutch, etc.- stock. If I remember the book hours added to around 20 or so. It was my wifes car then so putting a worth on my effort is a bonus . At $50hr. your other $1000 is gone. Having to pay labor will kill your budget fast. I am an ASE tech so I know the woes. Maybe another car would be best. Good luck. Tres....

If it doesn't run now save it and do a part-out and buy another decent running tsi. After saving all sensors, head, and a sh*t load of other parts for the NEW dsm you'll still make an easy 1 to 2k especially over the longhaul. You'll get a better understanding of these cars by tearing one apart and won't be intimidated about doing much of anything on the new one. THAT is the exact situation I'm in now parting out my N/T 6-bolt 1g and just bought a real nice turbo 1g fwd for 2k. Really glad I made the decision to that :)

I agree with that, I parted out a stealth a number of years ago and I learned a hell of alot about those cars in the process.

I am in the same boat with you I currently have a 95 talon TSi I bought to fix up to make as a daily driver but I am going to be parting it out and finding a better running car to keep.

thanks u for all of your replies. the head wasnt on the car when i bought it and it looks like the block was under water for 3 years LOL. I think ill take the "part it out" advice and sell what i can. I know where there is a 2g awd auto for 2500 that runs great with 144k. Thank you for the advice!!!

Yeah with the condition that you say its in you might be in for more than its worth. Good Luck

Parting it out is a great idea. Especially if the body is still in decent shape. Maybe take a look at the classified section on here. Always some nice rides for sale! Good Luck with whatever you decide to do!

Compression test motor on 2g awd auto and perhaps take air duct off turbo inlet and inspect turbo and look for any smoke out tailpipe, carfax, etc. Lots of threads on what to check when buying a dsm. Crankwalk is a concern on 2g's especially early 2g's but not usually on auto's tho.

I'll pm you about my 1g part-out.

You live in Wyoming??? Then my answer is the best person to fix your car is me :)

Seriously though, any help I can give you I will. I'm in Casper.

Are you looking to build the car or just get it running in stock form? In any case, I can get you just about any part you need. Just let me know. We have 4 six bolt blocks, 2 six bolt heads and a six bolt crank that are getting recycled soon, but it could be a start for you.

Edit: Oops, sorry, I didn't read far enough down. Hope you don't end up parting it out.
