I bought a 90 talon tsi awd on the classifieds here. On the way home (hour and a half drive) I try to pass a car in 5th gear and all of a sudden no boost. So I figure it blew off intercooler piping and pull over at the next exit. i checked everywhere and all the piping was together, after further inspection the nipple from the wastegate was broken off and in the line from the boost controller. So I ended up just contuing my drive home. I thought it was the wastegate so i swapped wastegates with another 16g i have. The turbo in the car has shaft play in and out and up and down. I started the car up and drove it about a quarter of a mile total up the street and back to see if there was any boost. There was no boost on the drive. I didn't floor it at all. when i pulled back in my driveway a cloud of white smoke hit me in the face from the exhaust. I shut the car off immidiately. i messed around with it a little more and started it back up to see if there was any change. no smoke on start up, I reved it up a little and some white smoke came out and i turned the car off I checked the oil and it is good. I think it is a blown turbo. I am supposed to bring it in to a local dsm mechanic tomorrow but the shop is about 10 miles away. What should i do? Also when i put the wastegate on the the part where the cotter pin goes in is facing towards the ground as opposed to towards the drivers side.

the car has dsmlink 2.5 and maf translator btw.

Turbo bro, seals are done for, and the damage must already be done if it isn't building any boost.

Man I had a T-15 in this hyundai right, turbo the size of like a softball. I blew that thing up so bad... So very bad... I thick WHITE cloud of smoke could literally cover my whole neighborhood if It ran even for just 5 minutes.

If you have another 16g, why don't you just swap turbos?

its a ebay 16g with blown seals LOL

i am really just conserned with what i should do with it before i drive it to the shop and seeing if I should even drive it the 10 miles tops it is to the shop.

If you already blew your turbo, I really don't know how much more damage you will do to your car in 10 miles. I think it would be rediculous to tow it there, unless you have a truck that you can hook it up to. Maybe see if one of your buddies has a trailer. If it were me, I would just putt it down to the shop. keep your rpm's low, put your emergency lights on if you need too. and make shure you have a phone on you just incase it craps out on you.LOL. good luck

I don't really know if I'd be taking any chances by running that thing to the end of the driveway... If the turbo shaft has that much play, I bet you can see score marks in the housing from the compressor wheel. If you are making contact, where do you think the metal shavings are going??? I would bet if you drove that the ten miles with or without boost, you'd be doing rings and honing the cylinders as well as a new turbo. That's also assuming there's no shavings from the shaft bearing entering the oil pan.... Even if the tow is $100, it's still cheaper than a 4G63. It'd be even cheaper if you knew someone with AAA... Just my .02...

your prob right. i think i am gonna get it towed in.

So an update on my car and it's current state... After I posted last I had the car towed in to the shop and had the 16g turbo replaced with a fp 18g I bought. The car is still smoking a bit but mostly under the hood. hopefully it is nothing to worry about.

Another update, I drove the car for a minute today. Smoke is gone and the car drives pretty damn good. I'm way short of my goal for a 115mph trap car LOL. The car is on like 12lbs and feels slower than my miata the way it sits. I can't wait to get it tuned on e85 and more than double the boost. Hopefully that will make it a bit more fun.

Your profile doesn't say, but do you have upgraded injectors? If not, you have DSMlink so i suggest getting the biggest injectors you can afford, especially if you are considering going to e85.

12psi is going to feel dog slow since you're nowhere near that turbo's efficiency range.
