Okay, I've been reading a little into the Hyundai dohc heads, they seem like they are about the same as a dsm head but have a smaller combustion chamber, which raises the c/r. So it should take my 8.3:1 pistons to ~8.8:1

I have one that has bent valves and it had all the rockers fly off and rattle around in the head. There is some scarring in the casting in the head. I had planned on getting a 1g head and putting ss valves, bronze guides and aftermarket springs ect. but I have this head here I might as well use it if it's okay. But is it okay or is it trash?

I would have a machinist go through it and evaluate if you don't want a headache later. Check for cracks everywhere (UV dye), cam bore alignment, repair any damaged threads, valve seats, guides, sludge buildup, etc. Can't really tell from the pics but if everything checks out I wouldn't hesitate to use it. Hopefully B drops by with his advice, good luck

It's likely salvageable. Get it disassembled, cleaned and pressure checked to see if it's cracked. Then check the guides and evaluate the seats to see what the head NEEDS to be repaired. Then you can come up with a plan as to how you're going to build it. At the very least I'd do a good valve job, mill it and assemble it with new valve springs (even if they're stock replacements you'll notice a big difference in performance).

JAM about said it all...

The damage on the outside bores of the HLAs.. if you can use your fingers and install/remove then spin a HLA in the bore that will be fine. (Pic 1)

Now where something dented the oil galley (Pic 2) remove the oil galley plugs and look and see if it is restricting the oil flow on the ID.

As far as your CR, you need to measure and run the math, when the head is milled, or the block, that changes the CR
Also the head needs to be CC'ed so you have an accurate number to work with.

Also the dish od the piston has to be measured.

Just by swapping the head will it increase the CR? Good chance... but you have no idea how much, the 8.3 to 8.8 is just a guess...
