i just put a new headgasket and timing belt on. and me and my brother just got it all put back to gather and and the misfires really bad and will not idle it is runing very rich and i looked to make sure that all of sensors were hooked up and i noticed that that the marks on the cams lineup a tooth below the center but not in the center is this my problem:confused:

Yep if the cam gears dont line up exactly then your timing is off make shure the bottom one is at TDC and the two cams lign up do it all again. That same thing happened to me and i got lazy and put some plastic in the gear and turned it it worked but i only made it about 40 miles and the tensioner idler gave out and bent some valves so be careful!!!

but will it cause the misfire and it not to idle:confused:

Yeah buddy mine was ideling funny and i dont remember about misfiring but one time i took a head off and put it all back together and i had closed the gap on the spark plug accidently some how maybe that will work for you but the timing has to be set properly. but check all your vacumm lines and make shure the intake and manifold are not leaking.

If your marks dont line up, i would spend the time to re-do the belt. It can run rough and even worse you could bend valves and have even more work to do and money to spend.

no i don't think i bent any valves cause we turn the engine over by and breaker bar and it all cleared fine:pray:

Sounds like you should have researched alittle more before jumping into a timing job if you're not careful you can really eff stuff up. Go back and do it correctly now and take your time.

Yeah, getting the timing marks lined up correctly can be tricky. Make sure and check it over more after you redo it to make sure it's right before putting it all back together.

Use a straight edge across the gears to line up all four marks on the gears, don't just eyeball the marks and see that the two cams are lined up with each other because you could easily be off a tooth or have one retarded and one advanced.

no my brother muffed up the cam timing, he was supposed to hold the cams in time while i torqued them down but he didn't know where to line them up at, i should have double checked him, he's never worked on an engine before.:aha:

Hey you should get a chilton manual it shows you exactly what to do. You have to turn the crank back like half a notch because when you let the tensioner go it will actually make it jump a tooth and the gears will not line up properly.

yea i got a haynes manual and it isn't worth a shit:thumb:
