Hey guys, I just put in a new Evo3 turbo, 550cc injectors and 190 fuel pump, please look at my profile for all the upgrades. I'm a newbie here and never tried tuning at all. Here is my first log with everything set to -10, 16psi boost on 91 pump gas.

I read quite a few good articles on tuning by kpt4321 and some other guys, but I'm still not really clear. How do I know in which RPM range is rich or lean? And what kind of timing am I aiming for? Please give me any input or point me to some more articles with detailed guides on tuning.

Thanks!

you are knocking, you can tell because your timing is suffering, 11 degrees BTDC timing at WOT is not great.

Your probably knocking in the midrange, but your top end looks ok. All I would say is read the dyno-tuning article enough times that you understand it and then tune your car the right way. We can give you pointers here and there, but its not gonna help much.

Yes I did read all the dyno-tuning articles and then some related posts under this thread and pocketlogger forum. But I can't find any info. on what timing advance indicating knocks and if it knocks should I add or take out fuel. Also what will a near perfect timing curve look like from 2.5k rpm to redline? Is it from 9 at 3k rpm to 16+ redline in a linear pattern? That's what I got when I logged my old T25 turbo with stock fuel pump and injectors. So should I tune it to look like my old timing curve?

Thanks for you guys who gave me good info. Pls keep it coming, I'll appreciate it.

My guess is you're knocking from being rich, try richening it, if the timing goes down further you know it's from rich knock (it won't kill your car.) From your o2's it looks very rich also. So, test out if it's rich knock, if it is start lowering the SAFC untill you get about 15 deg timing or/and .94 volts on o2 since that seems to be where the knock isn't there.

This is the RRE guide that I followed with similar setup, just trying. The settings are pretty much -20 , the second one on this link http://www.roadraceengineering.com/newafcsetting.htm

Yes I expected it to be rich because I set everything to -10 for baseline tuning. The problem is I don't know how to read timing e.g. What's timing am I aiming for between 3500 - 4000 rpm range and what for 6000-6500 rpm etc. Should I make it to look like this which I logged on my T25 on stock fuel ?

So for example I should aim for a timing of 10 from around 4100-5000 rpm ? Sorry for so many logs and questions, I just hope I can make it clear enough so I won't make any costly mistakes. Thanks again.

I tune for 15 deg. across the board. If I had a 2g I'd go pick up a $15 volt meter and hook it up to my knock sensor.

can talk more about hooking up a volt meter to the 2g knock sensor. I have never heard of this and it may solve a lot of my problems.

Just go out buy a volt meter and tap it into the #60 pin for the front o2 sensor..

I have the Apex turbo timer that can read O2 voltage so should I just hook it up to pin #60. Also is their a ground for the front O2 sensor?

Then I made adjustment to the 7k range changed from -20 to -18, and turned up the boost to 18 psi on 91 pump gas.

For some reason the full boost is reached at around 4k rpm, I expected it to be lower than that on Evo3 turbo, but not sure why. Any comments on the logs?

Your log looks a little better but it looks like it is knocking a little bit in the top end. I think that you are running a little rich because your O2's are at 1.0 volts.

Sorry pls disregard the log I made with 17 psi I think it was saved in wrong file it's the old one, so just look at the last log I posted please.

Try this...

1k -14
2k -14
3k -14
4k -14
4.5k -14
5k -14
6k -18
7k -18

And post another log.

You should definitly figure out the slow spool problem, are you sure you don't have any boost leaks?? I would see 15psi just past 3000 with my Evo 3.

As for your timing it should dip down to around 9ish and then should steadily climb up to 18-20, if it ever goes down or stays the same for a while this is an idication that your are knocking.

I haven't checked for boost leaks after the turbo install, it could be the intercooler pipe or manifold is leaking, I'll check soon. I guess I'll tune it after that. Thanks guys.

Hey guys how this one look? Seems ok to me except the unusual spike at 4200 rpm and also I think I got some knocks between 5500-6000. Let me know, thanks.
