I don't really know alot about cars, and I really need help. I was driving to work the other day and for a second my check engine light came on and my car died. I looked underneath and it was leaking water from around the water pump.A guy from a local garage said the timing belt broke and this caused the water pump issue, and probably warped the valves $1400. I didnt have the cash so I just had it towed home. I then removed the little cover on the timing belt casing and the timing belt was not broke. I asked him about it and he said it was stripped.anyway the car will not start but it will turn over also its non turbo. Is this guy taking me for a ride or am i just paranoid?thanks

It could very well be stripped. You can check by taking the lower timing belt cover off. Does it make a normal turning over sound, or does it seem faster?

Sounds like he's trying to cheat you out of your money. With the top timing cover off, take a ratchet to the crank pulley and rotate the engine by hand. Check the teeth on the timing belt through a few rotations. I'm not familiar with the 2g NT engines but try to verify that the cam pulley is still in time with the crank and that it didn't skip a few teeth.

Timing belts don't usually fail and cause the water pump to fail. Water pumps fail on their own when the bearing goes bad, then it leaks water.

Do a compression test on it if it has no compression your valves are bent. You can also take off the valve cover and see if the springs are compressed and turn the engine with a ratchet at the crank pulley if they stay compressed when the cam lobe is off the valve that means the valves are bent! It happened to me ### i didn't change the tensioner after I put new valves in.:mad:The water pump has nothing to do with the timming belt its driven by the crank pulley and the powersteering pump! Hope it helps!!!:thumb:

Here. This might help you.

First what you want to do to check and see if your timing is off or not is to jack your car up and steer all the way to the left so you have enough room to get into the crank pulley. Than use a half inch extension connecting to a ratchet and crank the motor clock-wise. When the pistons are at top dead center, make sure all the the cams are lined up correctly. If it's lined up correctly, check the crank pulley to make sure that the crank is also at top dead center.

check the compression first, then go from there. Same thing happened to me about a year ago, i stomped on the gas one night and my car suddenly died. I tryed to start it and nothing happened popped the hood looked around, everything was plugged in, then i didnt see my timing belt. anyways some how i got lucky and didnt mess any thing up. just the belt.

Did you hear any loud pops before the engine died? I know when my timing belt gave out on my eclipse I heard 3 loud pops (ie. valves hitting the piston heads) I would say pull the timing belt cover first, check to see if the belt is intact, if it is, do a compression test then so you can keep from further damaging you engine if you lost teeth off your belt. It sounds to me like this mechanic is trying to take you for a rip-off ride. The water pump might be unrelated, when the water pump on my corolla locked up it drained all the coolant out of the system, sounds similar to your situation. Water pump could be locked up.
