This is for my 95 RS i was on my way to school and it started smoking,i pulled over opened the hood and i didnt see anything, only thing i can think of is water pump i did hear a noise yesterday like a grinding, antifreeze on the ground and the temp gauge was on H..What do you guys think

thanks:dsm:

Could have been something as simple as a stuck thermostate. However, if you drove it far with the gauge on H then it might have turned into a blown head gasket.

Thanks for the quick replay, yesterday i did take out the thermostat just to look at it, but i put it right back??,i drove it 2 miles to the garage casue they coundt tow it cause of the low front bumper

Well, he might be right, you might have tuned something not too bad into a blown head gasket, you shouldnt run your car on H, you shouldnt even let your car get to H, gaskets melt hardcore at that temp. How long were you running it on H for???? Also, started smoking from where?? Engine bay, exhaust??? Since its at the shop already, I was gonna say pressurize your coolant system, and watch for leaks out the water pump, thermostat, etc.

Probably just the thermostat, I would replace it first before you pay somebody to replace your water pump.

Bad thermostat causeing smoke?WTF, and leak on the ground.

Exactly. When the water pump on my 1g went out, it started with a barely audible grinding sound and got progressively louder. Finally, one day on my way to school, i heard a loud "pop" of sorts and after a few minutes, my temp. guage needle crept it's way into the red zone. If you open your hood is there coolant all over the engine bay? If the pump went while you were driving, you should have a decent amount. Mine went everywhere.

Oh and what color was the smoke? That will help us determine what might have been burning.

A stuck t-stat could couse overheating that some people will mistake as smoke. I actually retracted that statement in post #2, but evidently the thread starter saw it before I did.

The real question is:
1. Where did the noise sound like it was coming from?
2. Was it actually smoking or was it water vapor? From where?
3. Could you tell where the antifreeze was coming from? Or at least what side of the engine?

A little more information is needed. The only thing I was trying to say is that running your car on H, or even rising towards H is not a good thing. Head gaskets can go pretty quick.

Ouch!! Now looks like a good time to learn some basic mechanical skills. Labor rates, especially troubleshooting, is really expensive.

Jim

How would you know its a thermo stat they didnt even know, wasnt like i had a garage.Trust me i know basic mechanical skills i have done a lot they would have been not be considered basic anyways i just found out they charged me $75 for a tow charge and they didn't tow it casue it was to low and they drove less then a mile:notgood: put i told them i wasnt paying for that....

Unless fluid is obviously coming from a certain spot, the first thing to check after an overheat would be for a stuck t-stat. The best way is to spend less than $10 on a new t-stat and gasket. A lot better than $100+.

Good deal on the towing though, don't let them get away with that charge.

I got a question, if it was becasue the thermostat was closed where was all the antifreeze coming from??Wasnt were the houseing was that was clean??

when my water pump went out in my 95 rs it warped the head and water spewed out the side of the motor and it to was makeing a grinding sound.
