Ok I have been working on this car for almost 4 years and I get one thing fixed and something else breaks! I know its a dsm and that's expected :banghead: I have a 90 fwd tranny and second gear synchro is grinding when i come back down from 3rd and reverse is hard to get into. I have a parts car 90 awd, but don't have the confidence to do a awd conversion and the awd is totaled but the tranny is in good shape. Is there any way to pull out the gears and synchro's and swap into my fwd? I want to do it as easy and dummy proof as possible so what would be the easiest options I could do? I do plan on doing a rebuilt tranny when I can afford it but in the mean time I would like to get the car back on the road. Any feed back would be great!!

You can not use the internals from your AWD trans in your FWD but you can modify your AWD trans to work in your FWD. You will need to weld the center differential and block the output shaft hole.

Thanks I will do some research on how to do this. Has there been many people that have done this? Is it very simple to do?

Thanks again

I have done it a few times. You don't need to take the trans completely apart, you just need to get far enough to remove the center diff to weld it. You only need to self the bottom side gear to the case, the rest of the internal (including the viscous coupling) you can leave out.

Sounds simple enough i'm good at screwing up the easy stuff :D so I will definitely take my time to research as much as possible before doing this if any one has pics that would be great I might see if I can get a local transmission shop to help out if they will do it for cheap!

Thanks again

I've been doing a little reading on this and out sounds like theres a few people who have been doing this. I haven't heard if its bad to do on a dd. Any one out there who's done it have any issues with it ?

I'll keep this short and sweet. The center diff has nothing to do with the front diff. The front diff mediates power between the two front tires. The center diff mediates power to the back wheels in an AWD car.

Your car is FWD so by welding the center diff, you're locking it together so that all power can be transfered to the front diff for the front wheels. If the center diff isn't welded in a FWD car, the tranny would likely try and divert all the power to the non-existent rear tires and the car would barely move.
