So I read this somewhere about using magnets (neodymium magnets, the strongest permanent magnets known) from hard drives to collect the tiniest particals of metal that pass through our oil filters. Turns out it's doable and most likely effective. The magnets hold on there pretty tight but for peace of mind I would strap them for additional support.

If you get them both stuck together they are pretty tough to pull apart.

Seems like a feasible option but what about them falling off from the amount of airflow going under the car(if you don't have that pita under tray) and the cost or availability of using them on every oil change? That and if your really worried about it why not just use a better filter? Just a couple thoughts off the top of my head, other than that I don't see why magnets might not work if put into use properly to help filter out the smallest particles that still get by. Good idea overall.

You wouldnt buy new magnets with every oil change. you would throw away the oil filter that has the metal stuck in it and then stick the magnets on the new filter. The magnets stay clean since all the metal is still trapped inside the filter

hmm different but i can see how that can benefit. I also have the magnetic drain plug, which when you do an oil change you can really see the small particles of metal that are in your engine so im gunna have to go with these new magnets

Good tip. I like it.

I'm tempted to try putting the magnets on. Then next oil change, cut open the filter while the magnets are still stuck on and see if there are a bunch particles up against the filter walls.

Nice! I have never thought of using HD magnets for this. I have been into computers for a long time, and always pulled those magnets just for fun.

We should have someone do a test, a filter with magnets and one without. Cut them open after the oil change.

My Auto transmission has some magnets on the bottom of the pan from the factory. They work great for collecting material. I wonder if putting some magnets in the bottom of the engine oil pan would be as benificial too???

Magnetic drain plug.

I like the idea too but how do we go about getting it out once releasing the magnet?

the magnet is built into the end of the drain plug, the only trick is getting it out and putting it back in. but every time i take it out theres fine metal particles on it and i just wipe it off with a cloth or rag and stick it back in

Using a magnetic drain plug is a good idea, but I feel that if you have worries about particals of metal in your oil then you have other issues. A good oil filter does the job for cleaning your oil.

Been doing this for a year now, didn't take any pictures but more metal/particles are trapped in the filter were the magnets are good cheap way to help the filter when it's closer to oil change time. Reusable magnets= great mod that costs less then 5 bucks :)

I have to agree. The things in your engine that are most likely to create particles in the oil, like the bearings, aren't ferrous metals (i.e. they won't be attracted to magnets). If there are that many ferrous metal particles floating around in there, the engine has some significant problems.

even though this sounds awesome i too believe that catching metal particles could mean a significant engine problem.

just something else people have been doing that makes me seem this is tied along the same "scam" even the word scam is not the best to describe the oil filter mag, but its as close as i can think because otherwise i would believe mass production companies would produce a filter with it integrated if it was a real effective solution=
