so i ruined my head on my 92 talon tsi by bending valves so i got a N/T head with 40,000 miles on it and i was woundering if the cams between turbo and N/T are the same or not they look the same but i tried putting my turbo cams in the N/T head and they barely move when turned but the N/T cam in the N/T head move perfect. also are the timing marks different if so how do i fix that to work on my turbo 4g63 ???

The intake cam is different. Swap the intake cams out. Put the turbo intake cam in the NT head. Also, make sure to remove the oil feed bolt for the turbo!

well when i had the turbo intake cam in it could barley turn and i compared the turbo cam with the N/T cam and they look perfectly the sam what is the difference???

The cam lobes are different from NT to turbo, but the cam journals should have the exact same diameter, so it should rotate freely if all is well. I assume you removed the rocker arms so there isn't anything pushing on the cams, right? Double check that you installed all the cam caps in the exact same place they came from, and that they are oriented in the right direction.

i think i put the caps on right. but the sa L and R for left and right and i put them on while i was on the Tbelt side so the front is the L and the rear is the R. is this right?

The cam caps will be labeled 1-6. I assume you wont screw up which side to put on the CAS and the other cam gear side, so take a look at this pic. The CAS cam cap has an arrow poining towards the inside of the engine, not away. then intall the rest of the caps in numerical order. Make sure that the arrow is pointing away from the head, not towards the inside. This should tell you where they go.

i got that part down but only caps 1-5 are stamped on both sides and caps 1-5 can go on eaither side. but they have an L and R for left and right so is the intake the L or R and vice versa for exg.

Ok, Im trying to explain to you that the arrows on top of the caps will tell you which way to put them. Just install them w/ the arrow pointing away from the engine, and there is no L or R to them

I think he means L or R side of the head, as in, intake or exhaust. If they're the original caps they should have an "I" or "E" stamped next to the number so you'll see 'I-2' or 'E-5' or whatever the number is.

EDIT: After re-reading your reply, it sounds like you have different markings. I took a look at the head on my car, which was rebuilt by a remanufacturing plant. It doesn't say "I" or "E" on the caps, but it does have 'L' and 'R'. In my pic it shows the L caps go on the intake/back side, and the R goes on the exhaust/front. This sounds backwards to me since I was taught that the T-belt side was considered the front of the motor, which would put the exhaust side on your left, but that's what I see from the head on my car. FWIW. YMMV.

That is correct. You always look at the front of the engine from the transmission side so the intake side is the left and exhaust would be the right side of the engine.

okay thanx alot guys that was my problem now i know and now the turbo cams work perfect thanx alot

So you look at the front from the back? OK, given a transverse layout, that's not confusing at all! :D

It is the same for all engines. It has nothing to do with the engine layout.
If you were looking at the engine from the timing belt side both the rear and the front of the engine would be in front. Put yourself in place of the engine and then you will have the front of the engine in front of you and the back behind you if that makes it easier.

For what its worth, the turbo heads we threw on the flowbench at school all seemed to flow better than all the other heads my instructor has seen(from mitsubishi's). We kinda wonder if the n/t heads don't flow as well, or something along those lines. It could have been that the other 2 guys and I had a better batch of heads(mine flowed the best stock of the lot). We flowed about 5 4g63 heads, and ported them, and they all seemed consistent(before the porting, after that all bets were off). I doubt it will affect you. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Feel free to correct me. It could have just been that everybody elses heads sucked....or we tested them that little bit different.
