I have no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to the engine, however I have a 98 spyder with standard transmission. the other day it bottomed out on an uneven road and scraped somewhat. since then the engine makes a humming/reving/motorcyclelike/alien noise which only happens while I'm pushing the gas, and increases as I speed up. NOW I took it to a garage which said it's for sure nothing to do with my exhaust system which is perfectly fine, they thing it might be a transmission problem but are not sure. they suggested it might be a problem with the drive column or shaft something of that nature. It has an appointment with the mitsubishi dealer I bought it from cuz they're good at that stuff, but I just wanted to see what people have to say or suggest so please offer up any ideas!!!

First, the dealer is going to charge you your first born kid, however, that's probably exactly what I would do if there were no decent local shops around. Second, how hard did you hit? You'd have to hit something awfully hard to fudge up the transmission or engine. How fast were you going? How hard was the hit? How loud was it? Etc., etc.

I was going maybe 5-10 miles per hour, cuz I was trying to avoid bottoming out, and it scraped but not excessively hard, there isn't any visible evidence on the bottom of my exhaust or bumper. but the noise gets louder the more I drive it so I stopped driving it till it can be looked at. I did bring it to a general garage but they didn't seem to know the answer to I'm trying the dealership, because they have a very good garage and work on mitsubishis all the time, so hopfully they can figure it out. I'm sure this won't be cheap!

so I brought it to the dealership today, their concensus on the problem is that it is most likely an internal problem with the transmission, and apparently the technician said my transmission has been rebuilt before, must have been the previous owner, because I never did. I left the car with them and they are dropping the transmission out to make sure it's not a problem with the clutch, but the most likely scenerio is that I will have to replace my transmission. Does anyone know how much a 2g manual transmission costs??? hopfully under 3000. The problem with just fixing the transmission I have now he said, is that if their are metal shaving from whatever broke in my transmission, then it will still continue to wear down and potentially have another problem down the road, and since I will be driving back and forth to NY for school I don't want my car breaking down in the middile of nowhere.

Hmm... They should have just drained the gear oil to begin with. That would give them a hint on where to start, plus, it could have potentially saved you money. Anyway, let us know what goes on. If you need a second opinion on what they say, you can PM me and I'll get back with you, just in case I don't see this thread.
