Wow!OMG This is an insane project vehicle, scarily beautiful even. Is it actually going to be road legal?
I'm new to this site and have been looking around the web for info on the colt's of old. I've got 4 of these in the back yard, here's a link to the original one I restored if anyones interested ( www.fotothing.com/speedyrr ). I've contemplated some serious modification for one of the other cars but nothing like this, but there's some inspiration here.
I'm from New Zealand by the way.
The other colts I have are the GTO's, one has a sirius dash 4g63 12valve turbo motor in it from a '85 fwd Sigma GSR, but thats not even close to this car, it's just nuts ROFL but a big:thumb: for doing it. I know a few people down here that will love to see this project information and pics, and I'll be passing this on to them.
Keep up the great work!
very nice. i would love to get my hands on some of those galant badges. your taillights are also very cool. love the ambers. im a member of nzmmc.com. look under "lilhemi". thats my name there. theres a small thread with my car on it.

I'm lucky to have this many, I just love the old "mitsi" 2 door coupes. I haven't identified one of mine yet but it has all the GS badges and interior, pity the original engine isn't in it. It came with a 4g32b twin carb cambelt engine that apparently had some work done to it, but thats seized now. That's the car I've been contemplating for a bit more power. I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread in the future. Your project:rocks:
As a matter of interest you might like to check out www.oldschool.co.nz if you are getting into the old rear wheel drive cars. I'm under speedyrr there. I haven't joined the nzmmc.com yet, but I might have to look into it.
Also here's a few pictures of my GTO courtesy of the previous owner.

Thought you might be interested, this has the sirius dash turbo motor in it.

speedyrr16,
very cool cars! i wish i had time and money for an oldschool project. i'm also really digging the hood ornament in the second picture (last post)! :D i need to get me one of those too. my only problem there is the same reason for no oldschool project. :coy:

Looking good.

FYI, I've got complete parts manuals that covers your car. Should you need part #'s, let me know. I'd be happy to look them up.

well, got it all runing and stuff. drove it home. set up my extra comoputer in my garage, uploaded dsmlink and got it to idle like a champ. took it out for a small test drive around the block. took her up to about 5500 rpm and about 12 psi just to see what it felt like. felt good then it kind of popped and layed over. no big deal, a little rich. just needs to be tuned. took her home and as im pulling into the driveway i hear a strange noise. WTF?!?!? its coming from my tranny. i get under there and inspect everything. i thought maybe a flexplate bolt backed out. i didnt see anything until i scraped my hand over a rough piece of the tranny. then i found it.

dont ask me how this happened. its beyond me. its getting welded up this week and hopefully goign back in this weekend. i had to pull the intake manifold to get to the tranny bolts but that was easy. its a whole hell of alot easier to pull this tranny than an awd tranny let me tell ya. took me about 2 hours just screwing around trying to think of easier ways to do it.:p oh well. at least it wasnt motor related or internal on the tranny. could have been alot worse. the car is really really driveable. now that the timing is set it seems to spool fairly quickly and pulls decent for not being tuned. as soon as the tranny is back in ill get some tuning on it and post the weight of the car.

This is a common failure when there is a significant difference in stiffness between the engine mounts and the trans mount. Are you running a solid mount anywhere? What about poly?

no. stock rubber mounts all around. i figured out why it broke. the case was compromised when i got it. heres an update for everyone. i got the new tranny in and took it out last night. i pretty much made a full pass 3/4 throttle. it spools fairly quickly. its running very rich and lastly its very, very fast. its loud and stinky just like a race car should be:D i was gonna go weigh it today but its f*cking snowing hard today. i plan on doing some tuning this weekend so ill update the thread after that.

peregrine, i am completely excited to see the status of this project. and please please add more pics :) and vids !

There was an old celica in a magazine I have somewheres. Painted green, inline 4 motor iirc. It was a road car, not a drag car. Pretty neat stuff. I think a black Colt with a 450hp 4g64 would be nice. Black with gold rims ;)...I can see the "foose" drawings now.

Are you talking about the colt or the GTO, I've got original mitsubishi parts manual for the colt 1.6L 71-73, also the 74-75 colt A112 A114 A115, but not for the GTO. But there are differences between what has been brought in over here in New Zealand and what you guys have over in the US. As perigine said how he likes the tail lights and badges I've had a look through his pictures before the project started, they are quite different for badges etc...Fortuanately a local car dealer has the GTO parts manual, so I'm covered for that too. Got to keep these cars on the road.
And it's always interesting to see how fast someone can get these old cars to go. I can't wait to find out what times this car of peregrine's is going to be doing.

im hoping to hit 9s eventually. i weighed the car. im not happy with the results. if its right the car weighs 2180 without me in it. i weigh 270 so itll be close to 2500 lbs when all is said and done. i wanted it to be around 2200. theres not too much i can do to lighten it either.:toobad: oh well. took it out again this afternoon. the roads were kind of wet so it got my filter and gm maf wet. it would go to 8 psi and then just die. i think its because the hotwires got wet. before it was doing that though i did a pretty fun burnout for about 100 ft. this car is gonna be super fun.

Any vids of the progess?
nope. my digi cam doesnt have sound. i could probably film me driving down the street but it would be stupid without sound;)

Are you going to drift it? Just kidding :)

Good to hear you got it on the road again.

You have to borrow a camera and make a vid asap!

uh, one thing i did last year was start working out and eating better. I was thinking that in a year i'd be track raceing, and at 220lbs and 6'1" i figured i could shave 20-40 lbs. i weigh 190 now...30lbs is like a back seat removal :p

LOL, im fat but i used to body build and i still carry alot of muscle. im not fat like you would think of someone at 270. most people think im around 240. im 6'. id love to be around 210. thats my goal one of these days.

OT: While reading this thread i've noticed a LOT of members are from michigan, yet i NEVER see good looking DSMs. In fact, i believe the last time I saw a TSI AWD was last year :(

Hey i saw another colt yesterday. On mill, its the same color as yours too, looks pretty clean. I was going to call you but didnt wanna be a d1ck and call you at 10:45. Its on mill inbetween the freeway entrance and Kietzke. I think its for sale??

well, with the help of my friend stock josh we got the car fairly well tuned. it idles at 14.5 a/f and runs around 11.5 a/f at full boost/throttle. before we tuned it it was running in the low 9s for a/f. it is honestly the fastest car ive ever owned. and this is at only 12 psi. im still having tranny issues but its nothing serious. i need to put a prop valve on my rear brakes as i cant do a burnout because they clamp too soon and too hard. im pretty stoked right now but i have a bad migraine so im sure ill be more excited tomorrow. its still got a little ways to go but im real happy as it sits. its as fast as i hoped it would be and itll only get faster.

I've got a video camera. Trailer it down to sac, and we'll make some video :thumb:
