My idle problem solved -- maybe yours too

I've posted a couple of threads about my idle problems, and have seen many more with the same symptoms. After trying several things, I finally found my problem and maybe this will help others.

My mods: TurboXS H-34 BOV, TurboXS HPBC, UICP, N1 catback, K&N filter and hard intake.

My problems: when pushing in the clutch, my idle would drop below 600 and the car would want to die or would stall. When air conditioner was turned on, idle would surge to 1500 RPM. No matter how I adjusted the BISS or idle switch, my problems continued.

Things tried: cleaned out the throttle body, put on new ISC, checked FIAV.

Solution: I noticed my camshaft angle sensor (CAS) was not centered. After looking back through some receipts from the original owner, I noticed he replaced the timing belt two years ago. Obviously, he didn't set the CAS correctly and sold the vehicle because of the rough idle. When I manually adjusted the CAS to center, the idle immediately became steady and stayed steady with air conditioner, lights, power steering, etc.

For those of you with similar symptoms, check your CAS.

Yea you need to follow this guide to get it dead on: http://www.plymouthlaser.com/timin.htm

There is no way you got it exact without using a timing light. It may be close but it would be a good idea to get it exact.

Yes, I am aware that I am messing with the timing. My step-father (a mechanic of 35 years) and I followed the proper procedures once I noticed the CAS was out of whack. The timing was off about two teeth.
