My Harmonic Balancer hates me

I rented the Chrysler Harmonic Balancer Puller from Orielly and it will not do the job. It keeps breaking the metal lip of the balancer.

I have soaked it with PB Blaster, but don't have a torch to try to heat it up like other threads suggest.

Is there anything else I should be doing?

If you rented the Chrysler harmonic balancer removal tool then you shouldn't be using the lip. My guess is you got a 3 jaw puller. The chrysler one uses the pre existing holes drilled in the pulley to pull them off. If you use the lips/hooks then you will always break the pulley. So no need to drill holes because they are already there.

Edit: I see that the "kits" they sell online come with both.
Use the one that looks like this...

and not like this

What bolt holes?

You have to heat the middle a little and pull it with a puller that grabs inside the spokes.

Crap! I JUST broke an engine down and used my Chrysler puller. I went to take pictures and the camera battery died

Anyway,

no need to drill holes because they are already there.
Zac, I think you're getting confused with a UDP. Those generally have threaded holes.

OP, if you flipped colt4G63's pulley over, you would see three equidistance slots where the Chrysler puller would hook into. They are on the INSIDE part of the pulley, not out past the spokes. I have seen some try to use the outside part of the interior of the pulley.

Also, are you using the correct length rod that goes into the center of the crank? The puller does not push against the puley, it pushes against the smaller diamater rod that goes into the middle of the crank snout (where the pulley bolt came out of. You aren't trying to push against the pulley bolt are you?).

Not talking down to you or anything, just that these are some things that I have seen people do and obviously it would give them problems. I know its no comfort, but I have done many, many of these in various forms of overheating/rustbucketry and have yet to even have an inkling of a problem with the Chrysler.

Now if you really do have a problem with it still being stuck on, then look to what fun kart kid and ed1380 said to do. You will need to drill out holes and tap them out for bolts in your puller. And then heat it up and keep some heat on it as you pull. Keep in mind that when you heat it up, the crank seal will be wasted (as well as possibly catch on fire - depending on how high you heat it. It would be wise to keep some water source near). As well as the interior timing cover won't be so happy.

Yep, sorry. I guess I'm so used to seeing these things with UDP on them. Like Mark said, you can use the inside and not the outside of the pulley to pull it off. you can try soaking it with some rust penetrant or something for a few days, spraying it on there every so often, or heat it with a torch. Good luck either way.
