My clutch is starting to slip

I have 95 Eclipse non turbo and just recently the clutch has been slipping a little bit under heavier throttle. The thing that gets me is this, it doesn't seem to slip in 1st-3rd gears, but it defenitly does in 4th and 5th when I try and give it more than half throttle. Is this normal?

I shift 1st-3rd at about 3,500rpms without a problem but if I'm crusing at say 45mph in 5th gear and floor it, the rpms just rev without me gaining speed. My clutch slave cylinder had went out before and it probably leaked some fluid on my disk, thats why I think I'm getting the slip. Any opinions on why it seems to slip more in 4th and 5th gear? and am I destined to have to drop the trans and replace the clutch assembly? looks like a very involved job.

Thanks

Yes, it sounds like a typical worn clutch. They slip in 4th and 5th when you floor it because it takes a lot more power to quickly accelerate a car at those gears than in 1st and 2nd. The engine is giving the clutch all the power it can, but the tranny has so much resistance and your clutch is so worn that the clutch gives/slips.

Try not to do it. Downshift to 3rd when you need to gun it. I shouldn't even have to tell you that since you have a N/T. :p

As for doing a clutch job, I think it's a pretty involved job. If you don't know what you're doing, get a mechanic friend to help you/do it for you, or go to a shop/dealership.

Your slave cylinder is mounted on the outside of the tranny and the disc is secured within the housing, so there is no way you leaked any fluid on the disc. My clutch started to slip in 5th, then 4th, then very soon I had nothing. I would recomend replacing it soon. ACT 2100 or 2600 is the most common upgrade.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I have a clutch install coming in the near future.

Careful--his profile says he's got a Non-Turbo. I don't know of any ACT clutches for the 2G N/T folks.

Oh thanks for clearing that up. Can you recommend a good aftermarket clutch setup for the non turbos. I do not drive my car hard very often so I would really like a clutch that is going to last for awhile. Should I stick with the stock clutch?

Thanks

I can't recommend any N/T stuff for you, since I don't have any experience with them. I know that Centerforce and Clutchmasters are two of the brands that offer clutch kits for the N/T.

I would suggest searching in the N/T section of this site, and also check for some info on the 2GNT site.
