What a crazy day. I was at a light just playing with my radio, and my car just shut off. I didnt stall it or do anything to cause the car to shut off. I tried to start the car numerous amount of times. Then I ran out popped my hood to check vacuum lines and such. But then I start to see smoke coming from my belts, then it turned to fire! The fire originated from the right side of the engine from the lower belts. I tried blowing it out but the flames just kept on getting bigger!! My friend was at a gas station 30ft away so I nexteled him and told him my engine is on fire! So he ran over with a fire extingwisher and that was that. My car now sits at Mitsubishi, I hae no idea why my belts went up in flames. There has been a loud sqeek noise from under the hood for a few weeks though. Please help me guys im flippin out!

prob an electrical fire stemming from the alternator or a wire rubbing against a belt then grounding out...? :dsm:

This loud squeek noise you speak of... Could it be that your ideler pulley bearings could have went out and it was building up some crazy heat from friction?? I don't know without looking at it... I would check that first... To me I would think that to be the cause.. when I get a squeak in anything I look into it so It doesn't cost me more down the road like a blown off belt that runs my Waterpump and I get to loose a $5K engine do to extreme overheat...
