much NEEDED rear brakes HELP :(

Ok, i was changing my rear brakes and rotors in my 92 tsi, got the rear passenger side on, then went to do the drivers side rear. As i was taking the caliaper (sp?) off, i snapped the one bolt that goes though the piece that holds the brake pads on (the piece that comes off) I must of been turning it the wrong way, but to make it even worse, it snapped flush with the piece where it screws in so i cant even grab onto it with something and try to get it out. Can i go without that bolt? or what would you recomend that i do? Is there a way that i could drill it out if i have to and where could i get a replacement bolt at? Thanks

No, you can't go without the bolt, trust me on this one.

You can buy replacements at the dealership.

Now are we talking about the caliper bracket bolts or the caliper bolts?

Long ones are the caliper bolts, they are called the guide and locking pin

The bracket bolts are short stubby looking ones.

Since you snapped on the of the bolts, try removing the other remaining bolt to get some wiggling room.

Umm, your life is in danger if you dont put that bolt back in. So I suggest doing just that. That bolt would be hard to drill out due to its hardness. However it will also be tough to torch out. You may have to do a combination of both. You may want to try getting a hardened bit, drilling it litte bit. Then get an EasyOut(reverse screw) and drive that sucker in there. Hopefully that will be good enough to get some grip on the sucker. Also PB BLAST the crap out of that a day or 2 before you do this.

It's the caliper bolt, where there is only one that you take out. yeah, it snapped almost flush with the caliper...

Its just a bolt man, its not worth the 40 cents you will save by pulling it from a junkyard caliper. The thing will be just as badly rusted as yours. Call mitsu and get the specs, then go to the hardware store. But pay attention to the specs, those bolts have a more hardness(I cant think of the specific name) than the casual hardware store bolt.

Thats the thing, we don't have a nearby dealer and i'm not sure if i'll be able to get that bolt out, so i was just going to see if i can find one off a junk yard car, and take the bolt and the caliper... grrrrrr this sucks.

I believe he is talking about going to a junkyard to get a new caliper and thus bypass the need to remove the bolt.


And to answer your question, you will need to get a caliper from an AWD model. The FWD caliper is different (it will work, but not properly).

There doesnt need to be a dealer, just call one up and ask for some specs. However as great an idea as this sounds, they will probably not have an effing clue what your are talking about. What you might want to consider is just replacing that caliper, with a junk yard piece. Or is that what you are implying with your last post?

By the way, the caliper bolts (guide and locking pin) are not hardware store found parts. But they can be purchased at most autostores, not just dealerships. It's a common part and doesn't cost that much like 13 bucks.

just a qwick tip, Dewalt colbalt steel bits will do the job, I have drilled out several hardened bolts with them.

Actually no, as I said, caliper bolts (locking and guide pin) are car specific parts.

When I was building my Laser (came in boxes) I purchased a bolt extractor set from Sears. It cost me in the area of $50 but has proven more helpful than nearly any other tool I own. They are very simple to use and great for just this situation.

Apparently we are talking about 2 different bolts... I am talking about the one that you remove to service the brake pads...which I thought the OP was talking about. That bolt on my car does not look like that.
