I'm thinking I might do this mod. I searched and read enough of the tech articles to know how to do it. But what I really don't understand is how do I get the motor mounts out in the first place? Do I need to take the engine out? Or can I somehow just unbolt it while the two other mounts support it? It sounds like a pain to get an engine lifter just to put in the mounts.

the easiest way for me is to use a crow bar and lift the engine and have a friend unbolt em. Its a little bit tricky but if you have a buddy its do-able.

i've done the front and rear while the motor is still in. The front one is a pain. a swivel works well in there. the rear one is easier to remove. I didn't support the engine or tranny in any way. The other 2 mounts held the motor just fine. i only did those 2 and it made a big difference. i left the left and right one alone

Would it be possible to do the same for the trans and timing mount using your method? I don't feel as secure that way since the motor is horizontally longer. I might just do each side one at a time.

All you have to do is find a way to relieve the weight on the motor mount you are trying to remove - via a jack under the engine or engine hoist lifting that side of the engine.

Use your intake mani and exhaust mani bolts as lift points.

I installed Prothanes in all 4 of my mounts with the engine still in. As stated earlier, just find a way to support the area that you're removing the mount from. Do one mount at a time. I just used a jack and some blocks of wood to disperse the force applied by the jack over a larger area. This is especially useful when jacking up the transmission and the engine by way of the oil pan. Once you have something supporting it, just unbolt it and pry out with crow bar/giant screw driver if need be.

That sounds like a good way to do it. Luckily I have tons of broken wooden boards from my early martial art days. Just worried about the poor oil pan though.

What are you worried about? If you put a piece of wood under there roughly the same size, you shouldn't have a problem jacking it up by the oil pan. It's strong and can hold it, no problem. Just don't jack it up using just the jack, as you'll probably bend it. Whenever you put the wood on there, jack it up slowly. You might have to go up and down a few times to get the wood sitting the way you want it. Then just take it slow and you'll be fine!

I'm glad someone said something about using wood to distrubute the lift pressure.

Back on topic....
Are you talking about the actual motor mounts, or the motor mount inserts. There is quite a bit of labor difference between the two.

The actual motor mounts. I'm not too worried about doing the inserts. I have the tools to get it out. I was wondering if I would need an engine lifter to get the mounts out cause I don't have a lifter.

If you do them one at a time, then you don't have to worry about actually hoisting out the engine, it would be ideal.

But otherwise, jack it up with wood, slowly, and only enough to get one motor mount bracket out replace it, install the mount bracket and move on to the next one.

i think someone mentioned it but when my cousin replaced the mounts on his neon he used a jack and a block of wood and he said it was not difficult at all. I need new mounts bad and plan on getting prothane and using the same technique
