I have a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse GST that I have been trying to sell for a month now and a lot of people who have come to see it love the car but are scared off by a knocking noise coming from the motor while in neutrel. When in any gear, the knocking noise in the motor stops.

I rev the car while in neutrel and you could hear the knocking noise act up more aggressively. What can this be? My friend said it could be the lifters.

Where exactly is the sound coming from?.

The engine?.

Bottom engine.

Top engine (Valve Cover).

Side engine (tranny Side).

If it comes from the valve cover then it most likely your Lifters which is common on dsm.

If it comes from the bottom, then it could be a bearing.

If it comes from one side (tranny side) then it might be your throw out bearing.

There are several things that can be but these are the most usual on our cars.

To make sure, Just get a screw driver and put one end at the valve cover and put your ear at the other end of the screw driver to hear more clearly where is the noise coming from,

So it's probably with the lifters. I'm assuming labor will be expensive because they'll have to remove the head, right? Can anyone guesstimate?

I'm trying to restore this car so I can sell it.

Does it still knock while the clutch is pushed in while in neutral? Lifters will usually tick all the time, not just while in gear. Lifters can also be cleaned/replaced with the cams still in the car. There's a VFAQ on lifter cleaning. Sounds more like a throw out bearing to me.

I had the same problem with my old motor, would knock in neutral with the clutch out but when pushed in it would stop. I swapped in a 6 bolt motor and greased the throw out bearing and it went away.

Yea, it's only in neutral when it makes the ticking noise. The ticking noise goes away when I switch into any gear.

Should I go ahead and buy a throwout bearing instead?

Is that a tickling or grinding noise?.

It can be the throw out bearing, But the Throw out bearing is more common like a grinding noise.

It takes a lot of work replacing the throw out bearing, so You may want to be 100% that is the throw out bearing..

Put some one inside the car and do the neutral thing, and you step in front of the car to hear where is the noise coming from.

It sounds like a ticking noise. If I had to compare it to something, I'd compare the noise to marbles vibrating against something. I don't know. I def don't want to pay for a TOB if that isn't the problem. I'll try to get someone to check it out. I really want to restore this car.

you dont have to remove the head to replace lifters, but you do have to remove the cams... I would deffinetly leave that job up to a profesional though if your not sure what your doing.

WRONG

You only have to remove the valve cover. If you are on stock valves/springs it's even easier. I did mine with just a crow bar.

You know I had the problem like that late last year. When I dropped the subframe a wrench that was stuck between the firewall and the subframe fell out too. I was all like.... OH DANG!

LOL.

Yea, some times something wear happens.

I used to drive my car with a ticking noise and 2 weeks later found out that I didn't tight my front wheels.

There were hand tight. :banghead:

It's definitely not anything like a wrench or a loose front wheel. I drove it home one night after work, I was going about 65-70mph and my car jerked slightly. I felt a slight power loss after that. I'm going to have someone check it out for me within the next couple weeks. First I'm going to get this shifter cable looked at to see why I'm stuck in first gear and do some light body work.
