usually reliable and dsm don't go in the same sentence but......
whats the most reliable motor? list your thoughts most to least.

out of....
1.8
420a
6bolt n/t
6bolt turbo
7bolt n/t
7bolt turbo

The 1.8 obviously. No turbo, smaller engine = less things to go wrong.

Reliability has nothing really to do with the motor in the car. I've had an NT 2.0 Six bolt that was just as unreliable as my turbo one. Mitsu makes damn strong motors, it's the surrounding business that makes the cars "unreliable". There is also many other things you need to take into consideration. Age, Miles, and most importantly. How many owners the car has been through. If it's been worked on by a bunch of different people, you are more than likely JUST going to have problems with either Hacked parts or neglected and beat to shit parts. It is really just your perception of how well the car looks like it's been taken care of. I am not one to put these into a list of reliability. The only way for any of us to do this is someone would have had to own ALL of these cars, under the same mileage, and same conditions. Which is impossible. My suggestion. Go turbo, you're gonna dump just as much money making a NT reliable as you would a turbo thing, because most of the things you'll be replacing are standard wear and tear parts that went bad due to time.

Actually I think the 1.8 is the least reliable of the choices. I've known of two people that owned cars with these engines in the past- both died early of severe headgasket failure.

Then I could go and say the 420A's were the least reliable, because I also know 2 that died from a HG.

:D

See what I'm sayin?

Well not a lot of people know all the people who owned the car before them and all the work that was done to it. Yeah you guys know people who had 1.8's an 420a's that failed but look at that number compared to the 4g63's. It's incomparable. Logically the engine without a turbo is more reliable considering all the variables are the same such as miles and how it was maintained and driven.

I think everybody can agree with me here

I do agree with lofty though, Go turbo or go home (unless you plan to turbo it) If you want a car that is 100 percent reliable when it is stock than I would say get a Honda.

...and I would come back and say that I think the 420A is one of the most reliable, as I've been driving mine since I bought it in 2002 with a blown head gasket. I've had oil running out the back of the block since 78k, and now we're at 132k and still happily motoring.

i would say 7-bolt turbo cause i had a 1Gb that i would drive to the track (3 hour drive), make some runs, then drive back.did this several times and no problems. my friends 1.8 shit itself on the freeway, water all over the place.

Reliability is 100% dependant on how an engine is used and maintained.
So, the owner of the car has more of an affect on reliability than the type of engine.

I would have to agree here. The reason so many dsm's are "unreliable" is because a. they were not taken care of b. not modded properly or c. pushed beyond the limits it should of been. Its much easier to make power that is going to cause problems with a 4g63T then it is with the 420A or the n/a 4g63. I think its all owner dependent

Reliability has nothing really to do with the motor in the car..

In that case, any car should be reliable, even a grand am with a quad 4.

There's always a few of any car that are reliable, and a few of any car that are not. Taking good care of your car helps to prevent bad things, but sometimes things do just happen (and other times they don't happen when they should -- never changing oil yet never breaking down).

I've never had any actual engine trouble with a 4G63t, sure a couple coolant hoses blew and overheated it pretty bad, but bad hoses have nothing to do with the engine. Mitsu could've been like GM and used plastic junk instead of hoses, so when they break it's a whole days job just to fix it.

all engines under perfect maintenance, all driven equally hard..... which would fail(seize, CW, dropping a valve, etc.......) last

Just like every one says, its all on what you want and how you drive it. also what your looking for. If you want something with power, turbo, if your looking for something to just drive then dont worry about power. any motor is proven to run or it wouldnt last. Sure everything has problems its life, but if you want something thats cheap and will last a long then keep up on maintance, you can build anything you want and make it last if you do it right. and about hondas, haha they last as long as you dont mess with S$$t haha. belive me i know. built a 12sec motor for 6 bills. sold it for 1200. and the kid thought it was a race car. installed it wrong and doesnt run for crap haha. he funded my dsm buy.:thumb:
