So I've got my momo hand brake, spacer, and the boot is coming in tomorrow. Has anyone attempted an install on it recently that could give a step-by-step process of installation? I've heard that you need to cut the plastic piece around the grip piece off and the boot should just as easily slide into it with the spacer and grip attached. Is that about right?

you have to cut a lot. You can't use a bolt on the bottom, or it will stop the brake from applying. 3 out of 4 keeps mine very solid. It hasn't came loose yet. It's been on for a long time. :thumb: Just get in there and do it. The retailers say they won't work, but they just take a little work. They also try and say that the Razo AT knob won't work. :D

Hah! Well we'll see tomorrow (now today) when it comes. And the boot wasn't too hard to get in there? I'm taking a break from under-the-engine mods for now and want to spruce up the inside a little bit. How do you guys think the painted base would look (pic 1), or just get the whole shifter kit replaced (pic 2)? Input = good.

Venom makes the kit for '98 MT cars, but it goes for quite a bit.

hey 2 questions....when you get this could you post some step by step instructions on how to put the hand brake on...im doin all momo in my eclipse and thats the next thing. I have been hesitant to get the hand brake because of fitment. I didnt know if it could be done. Which handbrake and boot did you get?

second question...could you post a link to that Venom shifter base?

Thanks

Hi there! The guys above were right, cutting IS the biggest part of the whole ordeal. It's not even an ordeal, if you've got some thick scissors ( I mean really thick ) it shouldn't be a problem for anyone. (I did it in about 20 minutes) Now I wish I had taken pictures of doing the process, but all I got was before and after, so I'll use them to help us out here. Oh, also, the part #'s I ordered were the pitstop air metal handle #15511501118 and pitstop black leather boot #15011500001. I'm not sure about the Venom shift kit though, I can't find any places that sell it anymore.

First! You are going to want to cut along the red lines with your - thick - scissors. Use any method after the cutting is done to just rip that whole outer plasticy-rubber layer off. Don't worry about cutting into the metal on the inside, that little rubber button up top is the only thing you don't want to cut off.

Second. You'll notice underneath the protective rubber that there is only a goldish (depending on how much rust is underneath) metal support piece. With your momo boot you should have gotten the leather boot itself and velcro which has a sticky end that you can mount to the metal at the bottom of the metal base, but it's not necessary. Just shove the boot in there tight and push it down with your fingers.

Third. You'll want to put the adapter inside the handle first, then shove the handle downwards so the MOMO name is up and the grip is down. The button should be able to stick out enough to push in.

Fourth. Included with your momo handle you should have recieved an allen wrench and a couple of screws. Keep pushing the boot down so you can install and tighten the screws on the left side, the right side, and the top where the holes are in the handle. NOT the bottom or you'll be having problems.

Fifth. After making sure everything is tight and not rattling, stop pushing down on the boot and lift that sucker up and over so it falls right below the metal ring on the handle, get it nice and snug so that using it will not make it fall off. Viola! You're done. Now take pictures and show us.

I hope this was helpful..

4speed, how does the leather boot mount at the end? the stock handbrake ends in a roundish sort of way do you cut it out as well? I see my painted sliver console still gets attention =)

Sids - Correct, you gotta cut/peel the whole leathery plastic part off, you want to shred it down to just the metal underneath. The metal bracket underneath is flat and straight enough that you can use the double-sided tape to stick to it included with the boot. Not really needed though, mine is loose at the end (not taped down) but it doesn't move at all. Oh also! I wasn't aware that was your silver console, or I would've given you credit. (I love the clean look of it.) Mind sharing with us how you were able to get it to look like that?

Hewhoisknot - Maybe it'll fit on a 1g? I can only assume the e-brakes are the same. Does it look the same as the one in my pic?

FiReBReTHa - Thanks! I'm not very well mod-orientated..most of my friends help me with most of my installations, but this was actually maybe one of the easiest things done to the car. And, like I said to Sids, I didn't use the double-sided tape in the boot to connect to the metal bracket and there's no wiggling whatsoever. It's pretty darn secure.

it was a pain in the ass to do, you could just tape it and spray it while moving the stock shifter from P to D to paint all the areas. If your changing shifters, the whole panel just unscrews and you can pop it out, oh you have to remove the oval tubing too.

Nice walkthrough! I think I'll be ordering a new shift knob myself sometime very soon. Very helpful.
