Can I mix these two? 2 qts MT90 and rest is BG. I have a half qt bg and I dont want to waste it. Ive read some articles that you can mix synth and non synth oil. We dont have MTL here in the Philippines.

do it... they are totally compatible

I know a lot about gear oils...

between MTL and MT-90: they are both made by redline... I prefer the MTL because it's a little bit thinner and I can feel the difference with the thinner oil (not so muddy) . They are both GL4 oils which are less "slippery" than GL5 (never trust a bottle saying GL3, GL4, GL5 approved... it's really just GL5)

FWD and AWD transmission are different than RWD. Rear wheel drives usually require GL5, which has a lower coefficient of friction (more slippery).

For the synchros to catch up to speed and engage, synchros in a FWD/AWD need more friction. Not metal to metal, just more turbulent friction from the oil / a higher co-efficient of friction.

Using GL5 in a transverse mounted transmission (FWD, most AWD) will cause a slippery condition between the synchros, where they won't catch up to speed fast enough and cause the gears to grind.... in the long run this will cause damage to the gears and synchros... even if you don't hear the grinding. Using GL5, you will eventually notice the damage.

In rare cases, some front wheel drives will use ATF, motor oil, or even a specially designed oil (Ford)... but definitely not ours

Even though BG Synchroshift is not specified as a GL4, that's essentially what it is.

GM Synchromesh (a pennzoil product, yeah the only thing they make good) is a very thin synthetic GL4 gear oil and will also work... but it doesn't provide much shock ptrotection

Mixing a small amount of BG Synchroshift (which some say is the best for our tranmissions) is not going to change your co-efficient of friction. At least not a measurable amount.

In fact, I've heard of people using 1/2 Redline 1/2 BG with great results

Me Personally, I only buy 2 quarts of Redline and I top off with something else

Hope that helps

Hey, thanks for clearing that. Ive read a similar thread here, and its BG + Redline shock proof. Even Shep agrees it is compatible.

I did use pure ATF(cheap brand) before, shifting was so smooth. No problem for quarter mile runs.
But I burned a bearing at long hi speed driving. 180kph. Do you think a branded ATF can replace the MTL or BG as an additive to MT90. 2 qts MT90 and .3qt ATF?

Only Redline MT90 and 75w90 (GL5) are available in the Philippines. No BG, MTL. I bought the BG from a friend who came from the States.

No... gear oil and transmission fluid are two seperate things

Redline MTL is the same as Redline MT-90, except they are different viscosities.

If you are trying to thin out the oil a bit you can use GM synchromesh, a.k.a. Pennzoil Synchromesh. It's very thin.

Or you could (proceed at your own risk) use a fully sythetic ATF like Royal purple, but I don't recommend it
This is what we did with my buddy's Focus, but only because his was originally designed for synthetic ATF... but Ford has issued a new oil, due to shifting problems... this special gear oil is for their front wheel drives (btw $20 a quart!). We used 2 quarts of Ford Motorcraft "special" gear oil and 1/2 quart Royal Purple ATF... It completely transformed the shifting

So freerevving ever check out amsoil transmisson and transaxle gear lube?

Yes I am familiar with their products. As far as I know, they do not make a GL4 gear oil, but I met someone using their GL5 in a FWD with great success. The particular transmission in his car is VERY sensitive to gear oils and will grind badly with the wrong oil. Of course, that was on a low mileage rebuilt tranny.... I wouldn't use Amsoil in a GL4 transmission

As far as their Motor oils... they are top notch but expensive. If I were rich I probably would have used Amsoil at some point (or Royal purple for that matter) but in an independent study they could see no difference in metal wear between Amsoil and Mobil1. Although Amsoil performed slightly (a negligable amount) better in a couple instances, the study claimed it would have no affect on engine wear.

Mobil1 is readily available at half the price so that's what I use. Or Castrol GTX if I go natural

Is there a different gear oil available from them? I just went to the Amsoil website and the only thing I could find said GL5

It has been a while since I visited their site, so I went to it and all the gear oils say this:

Amsoil website said:
Use AMSOIL Extended Drain Synthetic Gear oils in differentials, manual transmissions or other gear applications where one or more of the following standards are specified: API GL-5 & MT-1, MIL-PRF-2105E, Dana SHAES 234 (Formerly Eaton PS-037) for 250,000 miles, Dana SHAES 256 (Formerly Eaton PS-163) for 500,000 miles, Mack GO-J & GO-J+, Meritor 0-76N (75W-90) & 0-80 (80W-140), and Navistar TMS 6816 plus hypoid gear oil specifications from all foreign and domestic manufacturers such as GM, Ford and Daimler Chrysler. Can also be used in rear axles where API Service GL-4 lubricant is recommended.

AMSOIL - Long Life Synthetic Gear Lube SAE 75W-90 (FGR)

...so it's a GL5... but like I said, I knew someone that used it in a FWD tranny which was VERY sensitive to gear oil and it didn't grind for many thousands of miles. As far as I know, it never grinded. So Amsoil should work fine even though it's not a GL4
I personally would use something more specific

wow, That's news to me

I'm glad you mentioned it because Redline has been known to cause flat spots on roller bearings, on certain applications

The last time I checked out Amsoil (many years ago) they did not offer a GL4... I called them and they said that I could use their GL5, but I wouldn't do it

Well I'm in the market for some gear oil
Thanks very much for bringing that to my attention!:thumb:
Wonder if they have a 70W80?
either way I'm going to order some Amsoil

Thanks again

Well it somewhat new. That why i said something to you. I love there oil, So i became a dealer. I am not really set up to do orders over the internet yet or i would give you a deal.

See what you can do... if it would help you to get established I'll place some orders through you... right now I need four quarts

I am so glad because when I first read about Amsoil's technology, I realized that it would be practical/best for the transmission. I was disappointed back when they didn't have GL4

Ok thanks for clearing that. Royal purple is expensive and overpriced here in the Philippines.

How about a synthetic motor oil like 5w30 10w30 in the mix of the Redline MT90?

I re-read and noticed this part

I see what you mean. that would work fine... just make sure you use a good synthetic ATF like Royal purple or redline

I really don't have an answer for that... I'm not sure if there are any dangers of running motor oil in your tansmission

Just use some Pennzoil/GM Synchromesh... or some cheap synthetic ATF if you can find it
