Hey guys im new to this dsm forum. I just recently got a 95 gsx that has a couple a small problems with it but fixing it. But the other day i was going down the road and smelt something burning and my oil light came on and i looked at my oil guage and it was dropping fast so i pulled over and oil was leaking around the oil filter. I towed it home and jacked it up to see if the oil filter was double gasket but it wasn't so i started feeling and looking around and the oil filter holder thats holds the filter (dunno what its called) on was loose so i tighted it up but that didnt help? i put oil in it and stated it but it starts leaking bad around the oil filter is. but one of my friends said it might be the oil filter holder thats bad. what is that called and where can i get one at if thats what is wrong with it? I tried to search but didnt find anything.

did you try replacing the oil filter to make sure its not just a bad seal? If not maybe you should do this first since a new filter is only a few dollars.

The oil filter screws into the "Oil Filter Housing" so if it isn't the filter then you may need to replace the housing.

If the leak is coming from inbetween the filter housing bracket and the filter housing, there is a o-ring there. There is a head at the base of the threads that the oil filter screws on to. Remove the threaded part, and the water cooled section of the filter housing should pull apart from the bracket. Inspect the o-ring, that would be where it sounds like the leak is coming from.

If someone changed the oil filter sometimes the ring from the old filter gets stuck on the housing. Get a new oil filter and see if that makes it stop. Only hand tighten the new filter and make sure to put a little oil on the new o ring.

well like i said i did check to see if it was double gasket on the filter and there wasn't and yes i did change the oil filter. So is it a oil cooler or oil filter housing that that is on? It was loose and I tightened it to see if that would work but it didn't.

i have a 95 gsx and i too am having that problem when my oil drained from my engine i shut it off immediatly i noticed that my oil filter had come loose and so i tightened it and put some oil in the engine started it and it still was leaking like a slight but steady stream to the ground so i replace the oil filter and tried that and still it leaks there was a slight piece of what looked to be a orange seal of some sort laying on the ground but i am not totally sure could some please point me in the right direction and what happened to my pride and joy

any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks in advance

Inside the oil cooler unit, there is a plastic-like o-ring(probably about 4") in diameter.....bigger than your oil filter. To get to this o-ring, you have to remove the oil filter and the large bolt(also serves as the adapter that your oil filter screws onto). The oil cooler should seperate and you will see the plastic o-ring i am talking about. My buddy has a '95 GST that did that same thing going down the highway. Thats what we found with his car, but his leak was pretty severe, i dunno how bad yours is.He actually blew about a 4mm piece out of his seal!! You should be able to run the car and wipe the oil cooler unit off while it is running to see somewhat of where the oil is coming from.....in our case, it was in the middle of the cooler, the part that sorta looks like it is striped because of material variances. That's just an idea, it may not be your problem, but check it out and get back to me to let me know what you find out.
Aight man,
