where can I find a machine shop here in San Diego? planning on building a 6 bolt, but need to take the block to the machine shop first.

I have used several machine shops in the SD area. I looked around a while for a good one, and I recommend Wholesale Automotive Machine: WHOLESALE AUTOMOTIVE MACHINE INC.

Wholesale does great work, they are priced well, and the customer service is awesome. I had to get a 1G rod bored oversize to accept a 2G piston wrist pin. I took them the rod and wrist pin, and they did all the custom machining in a single day. Contrary to popular belief, this isn't a common job for shops that don't do a lot work on DSMs. I called around to a few places about the job and they acted like I was crazy. I told Wholesale what I needed done and they did it without any issues. They also checked the rod to make sure it was straight and media blasted it for free. I paid $40 bucks out the door for the whole job.

Before I found Wholesale Auto Machine, I had some work done by Hopsing. I had a head reconditioned by him, and he did good work. Here's a few pics of my head after Hopsing finished it. I had all 8 intake valves replaced and the deck surface was milled. It cost me about $300 bucks.

Hopsing's price was fair, but if you look around the area, his prices aren't far off other machine shops. After I had my head done by Hopsing, Wholesale quoted me about the same price to do the job. Hopsing's customer service sucks complete ass, and if you expect him to stick to the timeline he gives you, forget it. It took me 2 weeks to get my head back from him; a week longer than what he said it would take. I initially tried to get Hopsing to resize my 1G rod, but he said it would be a 2 week wait because it was Christmas time, and he didn't have the machine to do it. Come to find out, Hopsing subcontracts work he can't do out to Wholesale Auto Machine anyways. I found this out when I was at Wholesale and mentioned Hopsing. The owner of Wholesale told me he does a lot of specialty work for Hopsing, and after the good experience I had at Wholesale, I won't be going back to Hopsing. After finding out he's just a middle man in some cases, I don't see the point in using him anymore, at least not when Wholesale does the same level of work at a competitive price with 100% better customer service.

I too have started using WAM as hopsing botched up a cylinder head I had to have worked. It cost me my SBR stage 5 port and polished head and my l19 head studs. He decked a cylinder head that was warped causing it to shift when torque d down. It bent 6 valves and most of the arps were bent. I was not a happy camper but I had a deadline on a customer car. And that was the only 1g head I had that was serviceable.
