I am having trouble finding suitable wheels in 4x114.3.
I have an 89 colt dl wagon 4wd. would it be possible to swap to a different bolt pattern by changing just the obvious parts, or would they not interchange?

You would have to redrill the hubs and rotors. I would look at some honda forums, there are a few honda models that use the 4x114.3 . This is a small list of some, i am sure that there are more out there.
92-96 prelude
91-02 accord
XX-XX 240sx
XX-XX rx7
00-06 sentra
00-06 lancer

XX infinity g20

to properly ensure wheels can be used on your car, 3 things must line up:

1. The hub bore is larger than yours (if the bore is smaller, it will not sit flush on the hub when bolted in)
2. The Offset and wheel width is OK(if incorrect the wheel may sit too far out of the wheel well, and/or sit too close to the suspension components)
3. Bolt pattern (in your case, ensure the bolt pattern is 4x114.3)

YOu could probably swap out the front hubs, but your rear drum brakes will be the stopper. Look for some GVR4 wheels. They are always out there

whatever I get is going to have to be online.
I've scoured the yards withing 50 miles of here.

I've got some room to play with the offset, I have a lot of suspension clearance right now, and I have a LOT of wheelwell, I could come out quite a ways without them sticking out too far.
the problem is, locally, they just aren't there.
