I was wondering if any body has tried or heard of this being done on are dsm . I want to mount my turbo farther down the exhaust pipe . I have 4/1 exhaust and I have removed the ac to make more room so I was thinking about just buying the flange cutting and welding the flange right were the exhaust pipe becomes one . Then I would just have to come off the turbo right back in to the existing exhaust system it would also make for less oil return line .I also think it would help lower under hood temp I'm worried about damaging my carbon fiber hood and my radiator with the turbo being so close .I know top mount turbos have been done a thousand times I just also like one off projects. I Looked at companys that have bolt on kits all the way at the back of the car and then just dump the exhaust straight off the turbo instead of having mufflers but it looks like they do it on v8 so I didn't know if I mount the turbo a little farther down if it would cause more lag I'm running a small turbo. Looking for a little input .

Gonna need a pump for the oil return as now you don't have gravity helping you out.

How about the intake pipes?
Not sure exactly where your collector is on the 4-1 header. But, by post #2 I assume it's going to be lower then the oil pan....
I wouldn't worry about damaging your carbon fiber hood or radiator, theres loads of people who have that setup with a carbon fiber hood.

Hmm... In that case your return wouldn't need a pump.
Could work. I don't know how well that manifold will work with a turbo setup, but it probably will work just as good as the log type manifold and maybe even better.
You will be using a internal wastegate, correct?
So what turbo will you use?
I'm picturing your compressor on the passenger side (because of what you said if post #5). Like how Mark has his setup.

(I'm using this photo just to refer to the direction of the turbo, with the compressor inlet facing toward the passenger side)

Otherwise your setup will basically be like a very low bottom mount manifold.
Maybe if you took a picture of where your collector is right now that would help even more.

Like this low? (I realize in your case it will be more towards the passenger side, and a totally different situation, I'm just referring to height)

I have to ask, Why? I mean it just seems like allot of useless work. Im all for something new but i just dont see a point here.

Not trying to bust balls, Just wondering about your reasoning.

because the flanges I need cost about 30 bucks and the log style cast iron turbo manifold cost about 150 so I guess to save money . A nother reason is I like my nice shine stainless steel header I have now compared to the log one's I've found.

Damn rstare you went from a total noob to a expert pretty fast LOL
Lol, I don't know about expert, but I sure know a hell of alot more then I did.

If I were you I would spend the extra $100 bucks and get a cast log. It would be interesting to see though, either way let us know what you decide to do and how it goes. I definatley want to see pictures.

I hesitate to say this (because I kinda want someone to try this :D), but I don't think the cheap ass piping will put up with it. Just a little heads up (but try it anyway. I always did).

What do you men by cheap piping the flanges I found are the ones in the /build a turbo for 1000 /Im just going to weld them to existing stainless header and then weld the dumptube right back to my exhaust

That's the cheap ass piping I was talking about. I believe they will not take the heat (especially at the weld).

But honestly, try it. One never knows. It's gotta be better than the log style.
