Hey all,
I have been searching around for the answer to all my DSM woes. I have come to several conclusions. First here is my car and its mods:

1990 plymouth laser rs turbo all wheel drive
-Mitsubishi 16g turbo
- brand new Mitsubishi high volume fuel pump
-brand new fuel pump relay
-new ngk spark plugs
-hybrid front mount intercooler
-act stage 2 clutch
-fully rebuilt motor
-Abel racing 3" exhaust
-272 cams
-1g crushed bov

I just bought this car and am trying to get it running correctly. Ok the car burns oil and leaks a little. I have narrowed this down the turbo seals. So its not uncommon for the smell of oil to invade the cabin. Now the car seems to lack anysort of power and stutters and backfires at low rpms. Its like I have to rev it up then go i cant slip the clutch and moderate the throttle. In mid RPM range there is decent power but up top it lacks completely. Related to the dead turbo?

Just recently I have not been able to idle, I usually have to rev the car to get it warm before it will even think of idling. But the car just shuts off after coming to a stop, its like the idle drops to low. I can keep it alive with a quick blip of the throttle. From my research this points to the ISC.

My manifold is cracked slightly and am replacing it this weekend, could that have any bearing on the above problems?

Also the smell of fuel is very strong after WOT

Thanks for your time

1. Is the bov recirculated?

2. What is the vacuum reading at idle, I hope you have a aftermarket boost gauge.

3. What is the flow rate of this "high volume Mitsu fuel pump"?

4. What is the boost setting? Does it drop off at higher rpm? Does it hold boost but no power?

5. Have you check the turbo to verify the source of the oil leak?

6. Have you replace plug & wires, fuel filter and clean you air filter?

7. Have you done a compression test or a boost leak test? hint..hint :sneaky:

Lasers weren't available in AWD until 1992.

What size injectors are you using to support the 16G? What are you using to control the fuel?

With those minimal mods and those big cams you are going to need some sort of tuning device. Even with a "high flow" fuel pump, didn't know Mitsubishi made one, if you are still running stock injectors it should run fine as long as your haven't messed with the boost. I would go with oldman on this and ask what your vacuum is at idle and what boost you are running if you even have an aftermarket gauge. It could be so many things but without the proper equipment there is no sure fire way to know what is causing this. It would be a combination of problems. I would suggest getting an S-AFCII or some sort of tuning device along with a datalogger to monitor your duty cycle and knock as well as o2 sensor voltage. If that is your complete mod list I would say that the cams aren't the problem but they aren't helping on that basically stock motor either.

Hey all,

Yes I do have an aftermarket boost gauge. I bought the car with all this stuff on it, I didnt install any of it.

My vac at idle is around 15. The car is boosting to about 13 and holding. But it seems to be working really hard to get to red line.

The plugs and fuel filter are new.

edit: Okay I have more time to type now, I dont know about the high volume fuel pump, its just what he said, I know the car used to have a walbro. I looked to see where the oil was coming from and it is all around the turbo and against the engine. I assume the turbo is busted and it is causeing this lack of power. Also a thing of intrest is that there is no air filter on the car, its goes maf then to the turbo. I dont know if this is a problem..

I am borrowing a datalogger this week, to check the car out. I will try and secure a safc II also.

Thanks

I would definitely recommend getting a filter on there, you wouldn't want to suck anything big into there.

your turbo may not be blown my dude you might wanna check the seals for the turbo to make sure the have not ruptured
