Hey everyone, my name is Drew. I'm from Seattle, WA.

I'm in a situation right now to pick up a 1 owner 97 Talon TSi AWD with 46,000 miles on it. The owner is my uncle and he takes GREAT care of his cars. He says I can have it for 8k, is this a good buy? Its lowered on coilovers and has aftermarket wheels, power EVERYTHING, and a slushbox :notgood: Its still a really nice car and I'd like to buy it, but I just have some questions. What kind of money am I looking at to get somewhere around 300awhp? My friend Mick (who is on this board somewhere) told me I would need the evo III big 16g turbo with some stuff like injectors, BOV, wastegate, FMIC, and a 3 inch cat back. What would this roughly put me at? I'm looking to make this car fast. Also, what sorta work am I looking at for a 5 spd swap or will the auto be good enough for me (I wont be taking this car to the track or anything, i'd just like to be able to smoke some people in the area that talk a lot of crap.) Thanks in advance for your help, I'm REALLY new to the DSM scene, I just got rid of my 92 Honda Accord... so I know all about hondas, not DSMs, hah. :thumb: I hope I like this place :)

Well, you made the smartest decision of your life by selling your accord and buying a DSM.

You can get to 300awp with around 1500-2000 dollars.

You will need.

Big EVO 16g Turbo $600
550cc Injectors $200
S-AFC 2 Fuel Controller $250
The Free Mods
UICP $100
190lp Fuel Pump $100
FMIC (not needed but will be a nice gain) $800

Thanks for the quick reply! That doesnt seem too bad, I expected it. Oh and I heard turbos should have a 3 inch cat back to minimize backpressure but you said 2.5 inch.. whats up?

If you want over 350awph then go 3 inch. But for 300 or less 2.5 in fine. If you want a cat. Make sure it is highflow.

Im gonna straightpipe it, and hey, 350+ plus doesnt sound to bad to me, but that would kill an auto tranny I think... how easy are 5spd swaps on this car?

If you had a donor car, it would be pretty cheap and pretty easy.

If you have to buy all the parts separtly then it will cost quite a bit.

I would say, if you have a shop due all the work and you supply the donor car, it would cost around $400-500 to get it switched.

you do not have to switch the tranny, there are many many many dsms that have autos and are very fast, on most cars the manual equivalant is usually faster then an auto, but on dsms this is not the case, although a 5speed would be slightly faster, you probably wouldnt no the difference in performance that much. O ya buy the car.

ooooo... thanks for reminding. BUY THE CAR

It is hard to find a DSM with that low of miles :p

sweeeeet, im excited because I got enough money to make this car fast... bwahaha. ill be around for sure.

Everything looks good on the list above, but I would change a couple of things:

- First, 550's will not allow you to use the EVO III to it's full potential. Go with 660's instead.

- Second, an AFC by itself is NOT the right way to tune due to the timing issues brought about by subtracting so much airflow on larger injectors. Go with a chipped EPROM ECU with injector compensation and an AFC for fine tuning adjustments. Or just have the A/F and timing curves built into the chip and ditch the AFC alltogether.

- If you're going to push high boost on an EVO III, I'd recommend at least an upgraded sidemount. The stock unit will simply not cut it. An FMIC would be best, but isn't required.

- As mentioned in other posts, 3" exhaust is the better way to go.

- I agree 100% with upper I/C pipe and would also recommend a 1G BOV.

- Don't forget a good Auto tranny shift kit and a higher RPM stall converter.

For the price, it sounds great. Just make sure that all of the maintenance has been done and run a compression test to make sure the bottom end's healthy.

Good luck and let us know if you make the deal,

Andy

I wouldn`t pay 8k for an auto, they usually go for less than a manual, I got my manual for 6000-6400 (can't remember) w/32k and stock. but with all the stuff you get with it that doesn't sound bad.

see how much your uncle will let you pay under the table, every thousand dollars is 60 bucks you save
