I'm curious how many folks would be interested in either 6 or 7-bolt long rods for a 2.1L motor if a member organized a group buy of a high-quality part?

Mods, I don't know if this belongs here or elsewhere. This is not a solicitation; it's a general question to ask (1) if this is an interesting topic and (2) how to approach it in the DSM community.

There hasn't been any real evidence to suggest that a 2.1L extra long rod motor performs any better than a standard rod length 2.0L motor with the same overbore.

If you were so inclined to build one anyway, 2.1L long rods look to be a shelf stock item at slowboy. Even if they're not your vendor of choice, dealing with them would almost certainly be easier if not cheaper than trying to get a custom run done on your own.

Yeah, it's a big project and I really don't need any big projects right now. But in the interest of building a relatively inexpensive, high-revving alternative, I talked to Scat. They could provide a minimum of 40 sets at $260 per set, without freight. This is dead cost.

I'll take one, this leaves 39 others. Like I say, I really don't need to oversee a project like this -- and I don't want to step on vendor's toes recklessly -- but thought I'd throw it out there and see what happens...

A more useful, and sellable, product would be a 156mil rod. Cross platform useability.

Cross-platform would be cool but I'm out of my depth on that.

But for a 2.1L, these would be 156mm length rods, right?

Stock rod length 4g63's have been revving over 10,000 rpms for a few years. So where is the advantage of having a longer rod, when the valvetrain is the limiting factor?

I'm not going to debate 2.0 vs 2.1 -- We have Marcus and others to do that. This topic is just to see if there's interest or not.

Myself, I'd only go this route (on the street) for fun, and because I have a new 2.0 crank and 4G64 block. If you want to run a 10k 2.0, more power to you...

That or 162mil which seems to be the "long rod" setup as of now.

162's only fit in stroker pistoned 2.0 cranked tall deck blocks, as in the 64 block with a 2.0 crank but 156's will fit in 64's and 63's with corresponding cranks and the same stroker pistons.

Really wished SCAT sold a 156. It would be a logical upgrade for anyone going forged/forged.

Scat will make a 156, which is why I'm asking about it here...

Let me put this another way and leave it at that: Scat will make anything 40 people can agree on and the cost is reasonable. I know just enough to get into trouble so I won't lead the conversation one way or another, but I assumed 156mm rods would be the trick.

I'm not going to debate 2.0 vs 2.1 or 156 vs 162 or what have you. You guys know that better than I.

But if there's, say, a group of 40 guys who want 2.1L motors based on 2.0L cranks in 2.4L blocks, the Scat product seems to be a damn fine value. Unlike Eagle, they're finished in the US, and this may account for the rep they have for better tolerance. Seems to me this is an inexpensive alternative to the limited long rod offerings on the market.

I could run this project or perhaps somebody else could. Maybe even an existing DSM vendor...

Not to bring this back from the dead, however we will have a 156 MM Manlet H beam rods ready in about 6-8 weeks. We are having 125 sets made.

Pistons, Wiseco is currently our piston of choice, and we will have an 87 mm bore piston made.

We plan on building 2.4l blocks, 100 mm crank, 156 mm rod, and a piston to suit this application. Very cool news, we can go from 8.8:1 to almost 12.4:1 compression, all while retaining a dish in the piston... very cool stuff! Off the shelf piston for this application in a DSM will be around 8.8:1 however. :rocks:

what about the 162mm rods there Mikey?

Still have them, still use them, they are I beam only however.

Used the 162 mm long rod, 10:1 custom piston, 2.4l block, forged 4340 88 mm crank to help place third at 100 acre wood rally last month. However, this is only a 2.1l motor, we are planning on building the same 2.4l block with the 156 mm rods, and 100 mm crank this time around.. more torque!

Given the small buy-in, what are the odds of a 162mm Scat part, Mike?

We deal a good bit with SCAT as well, however I have never approached them on making a custom rod, I will do so on Monday and report back. If I only have to make 40 pieces, I will surely do it for everyone, even if only a few people want them right now.

I stock at least five sets of 2.1l 87 MM bore pistons as well, would make for an almost budget like 2.1l... man I like that motor :)

I would buy a set of aluminum ones, anyone talk to groden?
