So the liftgate reveal moulding (MB881972) has been discontinued. I have tried to order online through Mitsu dealers of NA. I have also tried overseas through the company that specializes in getting, literally, "overnight parts from Japan." Either a lot of people are changing their hatch glass or Mitsu didn't envision people changing it often and made few replacements. Just wondering if anybody has found a universal substitute of some sort?

Just some basics if somebody has a clue but needs a description: The glass isn't held in by the reveal moulding. It's job doesn't even involve sealing the glass to the hatch. All it does is center the glass and fills in the channels to cut down wind noise. The glass is held in by Window-Weld, and the moulding holds to the glass and fills the void between the glass and the hatch. The moulding retains no holding capacity to the hatch itself.

Just remove it. I did not bother installing new molding. I put some thicker spacers between the glass and hatch to raise the glass more flush to the hatch...then windo welded away. The flush look brings it up to date more on par with vehicles built in the last 5-10 years. Plus you never have to worry about replacing cracked or worn molding again. I've noticed no whistling or any more wind noise than usual.

Do you have any closeups? I've thought about just removing the moulding altogether but not sure what to do with the gap that goes around. My option was to see if there was some sort of universal moulding that can sit in between, similar to the oem but cut to size and no channel in it for the glass.

Rejoice brothers, for I found a suitable solution. There are, however, pros and cons to this purchase.

The part number I have is 409T105BFL. Google it or buy it from Amazon. I got mine through a independent seller on amazon. About $70-80 per 75ft depending on where you get it.

Anyway, I found this while looking up a generic list of glass mouldings. I wanted something that was similar to OEM. This matches OEM almost perfectly that it makes me wonder if they're made by the same factory. The only thing that is different is that it's cut to fit, has no steel imbedded liner for stiffness, and came with butyl lined on the inside to stick to the glass for ease of installation.

I don't think the lack of steel liner will affect it too much and the addition of the butyl is better than OEM as the service manual had you install 3M .040" thick tape on the sides to attach the moulding. I wasn't entirely confident in that method as the stock moulding I pulled out had a different kind of tape that was similar to pipe teflon thickness and the glass was fitting tight as it is.

The only con is that it's sold in bulk, $70-$80 per 75ft. Stock length is about 12.5 ft so you can get 6 mouldings per roll. The upside is if you sold it for a little less than the price of OEM, you'll easily make back that money and then some. Auto glass installers quoted me about $50 for the moulding so you can't go wrong here. I've included a couple of pictures of how it looks and where the ends meet. As it sits now, it's a snug fit and the moulding is in the channel all the way around. I'll most likely pull the glass tomorrow and line the edges with window-weld and finish the installation.

2021 and this thread came in handy, added a pick to the post for any Ontario Canada owners looking for a replacement weather stripping for the rear hatch window.

I was under the impression when i dismantled the rear hatch that the previous owner had not done anything to it....after dismantling, repairing...discovering missing parts i have discovered i really under estimated the previous owner.... i was able tobget the back window spacer from mitsoemparts.ca but the rubber is discontinued....as many of the parts 😠. Found this thread....did NOT want to pay $150 usd (like $180 cad) so looked at amazon and finally came across 16ft of the same general universal stuff. $26 cad free shipping. Did the measurements and it should fit as discribed above....hopefully ill get it soon enough and be able to respond here.

Thanks for the above posts people.

You seem to have only 1 photo which is too far out. Do you think you can take a few closer up pics of how it currently sits? Have you noticed any dirt buildup inside those seams now that you don't have the molding? Any new rust spots?
