My friend has a plymoth laser 2.0 n/t. When he starts his car it ticks and clicks and makes this tapping noise. It is not from the cams but it is in that region under the cam gears. I think it might be coming from the crank pully but im not sure. He was spraying belt conditioner on his belts and the noise got significantly quieter, but came back. It has to be with his belts but the belt are tight and don't wiggle. Please help me and give me any advice as possible.
Thanks in advance,

It wouldn't hurt to check out the fuel injectors also. I know it doesn't apply, but my old Toyota Camry had a slight ticking. I thought for sure it was coming from the lifters, toyotas are notorious for the shims wearing thin over time... I tried to pinpoint where the noise was coming from, and I kept thinking it was coming from around the intake manifold. So I found out it was my injectors making the noise. Don't know if it applies to all cars, but the injectors on my camry apparently start to make noise after they get to a certain age... 245k on it... 220k on original injectors..:thumb:

I have only had my DSM for couple weeks now, so I am not yet familiar with it. Been toyotas whole life. Now that you mention it, I had an 86 GT-S celica that had that same noise. Unfortunately it was my beater and didn't diagnos the problem until my whole timing system got f****ed. Looked to me that the idler pulley gave way, the bearing seal came off with so much force it sliced through the timing cover, and was sticking 3/4 of the way out of the cover when I found it. I would definitely check out the timing system ASAP!!
Better safe than sorry, right? I changed the belt and pulley on my new DSM this last weekend, right after I found out the 420A is an "interference" engine:tease: :laser:
