Hey, I have been having some major problems with my Tial Q BOV. First, the flange leaks like crazy. I have put in 3 new o-rings and it still leaks. Secondly, as I try and boost, I can hear the bov fluttering, kinda like it is opening and closing rapidly under pressure.

Now I am no expert on the Tial BOV, but does that mean I need a heavier spring or something? Or is this thing just junk to begin with?

Thanks,

Garret.

Well, it most certainly is not junk.
*edit* In general the tial's are one of the best BOV's on the market. Maybe the one you have is some how defective, but as a whole it is a good product.

Here is a little info from Tial to determine the spring rate you should be using. Hope this helps a little.

Well, the car is about 11 in/hg at warm idle, and that means i need to use the "standard" spring. However, since the flange also leaks so bad it might go higher.

So, any insight into the leaking flange, or why it would be fluttering under boost?

The car is cammed, running BC 280's. I was told when I bought it that it had the black spring, since that was what I specified, but I never did take it apart and check it, just assumed it was correct.

I will do that this evening and double check.

When I bought my tial 50mm from dejon, i was sent the wrong spring 3 times. I can bet its got the wrong one in it, and thats why your getting the issues.

And no where in here, do yo specify what spring your using.

Sorry, what I meant in my last post was I specified to the vender which spring I wanted. Since I knew the car was cammed and would have a vacuum around 10-12 I decided on the black spring.

If they did send me the wrong spring that could be the reason I hear it fluttering, but I still need to figure out why the thing wont seal.

The fluttering is a good indication of the wrong spring. As far as the seal, are you talking about the v band part, or the piston inside the valve itself?

The V-band. Now I called Tial and talked to them today about the issue, from what they are telling me there is a good chance my welded flange on my intercooler piping is warped. If this is the case I will be extremely upset since I have not had one good experience yet with the company that produced the piping.

Regardless, I am going to take it off and inspect the flange, and the spring.

Also, they are telling me that the fluttering that I am hearing is actually compressor surge... So my question is, why would the turbo be surging while I have the throttle open...

oh yeah, we have a wrong spring... I specified the black spring when I ordered... apparently I ended up with the pink spring.

So instead of 8-11 in/hg, I get one for 20-21 in/hg. Yeah that was close...

I went thru this whole ordeal with a customer car. At lower rpms 3500-5500 it would sound like the BOV was leaking or fluttering. The car had a FP TDO5-20g and after going from a Greddy to a Tial BOV and then 2 spring changes it ended up being compressor surge. The turbo flows to much air at low engine speed and backs up. The turbo died with major thrust bearing damage after 1 season on the streets.

Well, I called Tial and they tell me its compressor surge, so I call Bryan at FP and he tells me that there is no way in hell that its compressor surge.

So I guess I will get a new spring at see what happens. I will update this after I get a new spring, and get my 45 pipe back from the manufacturer.

I use the old style tial bov, Its the only part ive used on all x4 of my turbo builds, they weren't all dsm's either.

As for the leaking.. sounds like your bov flange is warped, its a very basic concept of sealing, the O-ring, vband flanges and the clamp. It seals very well.

Where is your BOV installed, and where are you getting the vac source from?

it sounds like your surge problem is from the heavy spring, I was reading and a couple honda guys had the same issue.
