I had a 1494 error, so I been calling auto zone, kragens, and pepboys to get a price on this part, but no one can find it listed.
I tried having them check under
leak detection pump, evaporative emissions solenoid, and evaporative emissons ventilation switch, but none of those worked.
Is this thing called something else at the parts stores?

I looked up the P1494: Leak Detection Pump Switch or Mechanical Fault (Chrysler, Jeep).

Although I can't say what that might actually be called, if you can take a picture of it and maybe the location relative to the motor I'm sure somebody can help you with a "real" name that will allow you to find the part. At the very least, it should be able to be found in CAPS.

Its actually on a 1997 Eclipse.
I dont know what it is or where its at, so I cant take a pic of it.
I called the delaership and they know what it is, but I was hopin that I would be able to get the part elsewhere since the dealer is going to be quite expensive.

Autozone gives a definition, but doesn't seem to offer a product for the consumer:

leak detector:
A device using visual or audible signals to indicate a leak.
A dye-type fluid that may be injected into a system that will indicate the presence of a leak.

leakdown test: A test using 100 psi (689.5 kPa) air pressure injected in each cylinder via the spark-plug hole or injector port to determine the leakage past the rings, gaskets, or valves.

Could this be it?:

EDIT: I think I found what you're looking for.

Napa:

A list of other leak detectors found at Napa stores:

^^^^^^^You've definitely found a lot of leak detecting items. However, the thread starter is getting a CEL code P1494 (post 2) for an item that is found on these cars.

Nice try. but no cigar.

I personally would get a hold of the dealer and try to figure out what the part actually is, where it's located, and maybe you can figure out what it might be called somewhere else. Although, it might be a dealer item.

Let me try one more time. If this isn't it then I give up. I've been looking for about an hour now.

And that's what "sticking with it" will get you........NICE FIND. :thumb:

Now at least he has something to look for.

Oh yea, before you actually buy the new part, check the lines for cracks and leaks. That could be your whole problem.

does anyone know if you can buy this at Kragens or Pepboys?
Maybe have a part number?

This link didn't take me as long to find. Go down to page 31-51. You may also want to glance at page 94 (the last page):

http://www.lindertech.com/docs/j_thornton_obd_evap_systems.pdf

I will glance around and see if I can find a part number for you, but I did not see any specific part numbers in the PDF file above.

EDIT: Here is a link that gives a few part numbers, but I don't think it specifically gives a LDP part number:

Here is something else I found, but alas it does not give a part number:
Chrysler

Evap leak-detection tips. For your information, Chrysler has streamlined the diagnostics for evaporative system leaks on some of its 1998-2002 vehicles with OBD II systems (full application list below).

Evap leaks will typically turn on the MIL and store one of three codes-P0456 (small leak detected), P0442 (medium leak detected) or P0455 (large leak detected). The leaks are nailed by the PCM using a special Chrysler-developed apparatus known as a leak-detection pump (LDP). On or near the LDP is a vent valve, and its this valve that should be suspected anytime the pump has determined an evap system leak exists. Here's the diagnostic drill:

Use a component locator manual to find the LDP and vent valve, then get the vehicle up on a lift. Now remove the vacuum hose from the top of the vent valve and attach a hand-held vacuum pump to its port. Apply 20 in./Hg vacuum to the valve and observe the gauge on the pump for 10 seconds.

The vacuum should hold between J 5.5 and 20 in./Hg. If it falls below 15.5 in., the vent valve is leaking. Replace it, making sure all hoses and clamps are securely attached. To complete the fix, drop the vehicle and clear the DTC from PCM memory. If the MIL illuminates and the DTC reappears, says Chrysler, follow the trouble tree to the letter for that specific code.

Vehicles that can benefit from the streamlined diagnostics are 1998-99 Hreeze, Cirrus and Stratus models, as well as 1999 Sebring convertibles with California emissions, all 1998-2001 LH-cars (Concorde, Intrepid, LHS, 300M) and all 2001-02 Town & Country, Caravan and Voyager minivans.

You can see the above quote in the link below:

EDIT x2:

Here is the only thing I could find (post #39):

http://www.dodgeforum.com/m_122229/mpage_2/tm.htm

if it is the LDP...
pn-4891419AA
cost-57.00
list-95.00
lots available...

From post #28:

minor evap is almost ALWAYS the gas cap..
gross evap is almost always the LDP..

From post #41:

P0XXX codes are universal for all OBDII vehicles
P1XXX codes are manufacturer specific

EDIT x3: I think you may be able to find a part number here too. This seems like a really good link:

http://forceauto.ru/catalogs/chrysler.html?year=01&model=01A&group=25&sgrp=01A250p0ps1p

EDIT x4: Ha! I finally found it!

EDIT x5:
After checking back with this thread, I noticed that the link in post #6 was down for a short while. Therefore, I am posting up what is in the link for those of you who are searching through the archives.

OBDII Code 1494 Chrysler Leak Detection Pump Repair

The Chrysler evaporative Emissions monitoring system uses an air pump to pressurize the fuel tank and charcoal canister. It has a solenoid, switch and pump all in one unit

You must be logged in to view this image or video.

This is a vacuum-powered diaphragm pump. It is located under the car, just behind the engine, sitting on a crossmember. Just follow the lines in the underhood vacuum hose diagram.
Connections: a: common b: solenoid c: diaphragm position switch.

You must be logged in to view this image or video.

After prying the unit apart, and de-soldering the solenoid connections the connectors and switch can be pulled out of the potting . There is a normally closed reed switch, and a diode to stop spikes from the solenoid. Either one of these may be defective. The reed switch also gets destroyed in removal. Just replacing the whole unit may be the most practical fix. In this case the reed switch contact was intermittent, due to vibration. The entire pump unit had vibrated loose from the mount

well I bought one of these damn things.
Cost me about 172 bucks at the dealer.
Just put it on today, so I guess in the next few days I'll know if the check engine light is going to come back or not.

Oh and its not the gas cap.
I put a brand new cap on to be sure. Still same result.

well the pump didnt help.
went to the car this morning fired it up, and check engine poped on again.
Hanvet been able to check to see if its still the same 1494 error code, but I am willing to bet I get the same thing again.

thought I would update this.
I got the car scanned today and its the same code I'm getting again (1494)
I guess I am going to take car to the dealer when I get paid and try to get some stuff figured out and drain my wallet again.

I figured a work around for getting my van smogged.
It is:
1) fill the tank full of gas and clear the code free at AutoZone.
2) Let all the monitors except the EVAP one run for a few days.... keep the tank over 90 % full the entire time. The EVAP monitor will not run on a full tank. California allows cars to be smogged if 2 or fewer monitors have not run.
3) when all but 2 monitors have run get the car smogged.
