Hey guys, my first dsm... tsi awd, not only is it my first dsm, but my first manuel car. I've been getting the hang of launching, usually reving about 3000-3500 rpms before I drop the clutch (as i drop the clutch I thromp down on the gas) and I wanted to know a safe number to rev too before I drop the clutch.... like at what point is it considered to be unwise, and if there is anything else specific I should do when launching.

Also, when I put on my greddy type s BOV I found out the hard way that I needed an adapter and ordered it off ebay. Slightly disappointed when i got it, cost me 25 bucks and turned out to be something I could had made myself for a few bucks with a welder. My only concern is that where the BOV and the adapter plate meet, its metal on metal and Im concerned this is causing a leak making me lose milage and boost. now I couldn't tell you for sure what my my boost is at or anything because at the moment I am too poor for a boost guage and the BOV is my first upgrade. I do think that there may be a SLIGHT hissing sound when accelerating at high speeds which makes me think even more that there is a leak. Ill probably get a gasket kit soon.

my last question is... what would any of you consider a safe cruising RPM to be at, I know these engines can withstand a lot however in Higher rpms... 5,000-7000 the reving is extremely loud and makes me feel like I am just Annihilating my engine, for now when I cruise on streets I try to keep it between 2500-3000 rpms.

thanx much! :talon:

you really shouldnt be running your blowoff valve without a gasket.. its really not good. Go to an autoparts store and ask for gasket material to seal air. Put the gasket material on your table, place the blowoff valve on this gasket material flange side down. Trace the flange, cut it out and add the holes where the blowoff valves flange holes are at and bolt it on with the gasket.

When you say "its really not good" is there anything damaging that can happen? or is it just lost of power and milage?

i usually dont drop the clutch, thats alot of stress to put on your transmission gears, and an easy way to break something, i usually rev it to 4500 or so, then slowly let the clutch out (slip it) and press the gas down.. i get sucked back way harder then when i dropped it, and i at least don't feel as bad about launching it.... right at the end my tires break lose.. anyways, yeah go to a parts store and get the material, for a hole puncher for the piston on the BOV, i took a piece of pipe that was roughly the same size as the piston, and took a grinder and sharpened it, and went over it with 2 files until i ran my finger around it (not thinking it was very sharp) and sliced my finger open and lost a little blood, then after i came back out with a bandaged hand, i welded a piece of flat steel on top of it, (the round piece was about 2 inches in length) anyways, position that on something sturdy, and tap your way around the "punch" until you are all the way through, this worked really good for me, i cut one out with a utility knife, but i liked this better (probably takes more time, but it's hard to cut a perfect circle anyways else, and i was bored on a rainy day) hope i helped, you can probably do it 100 different ways, i just shared my own way.

umm... I dont exactly know what slipping would be... im guessing gently let it out as if i were starting in first gear... after it catches... do i quickly let it all the way out?

Also, any insite on the third part of my post... about being scared to rev to high... like the engine gets pretty loud at higher rpms and it makes me feel like im serverly damaging the car.

hmm.. really loud, can you give us a description? does it vibrate or anything? engines do get fairly loud when they get above 4000 rpm or so.

No vibration, im fairly sure there is nothing wrong with the engine itself, it may just be that the rpms climb so fast when i thromp on the gas the engine goes from a lower volume to a higher one simply because of fast acceleration. Ive also been told that the engines on say japanese cars are typicaly louder then other turbod cars. Other people have told me I am worrying about nothing, by this I mean they have takin a ride with me so i could show them exactly what I meant and I was told it was no big deal.
