Hey guys what is the best way to launch an AWD? Specifically a 91 Talon? I am, used to only FWD cars. I know you guys are going to say to get out ant try it, and see what works for me, but is there any "sweet spot" in the RPM band to launch at? Any RPM too high?

Ok, and now for a NON smart ass reply...

Most begin boost at or around 2K, unless you have a big turbo, then it is around 2800 usually.

Unless you have some serious axles and the such, I would say start at 26-3200 RPMs, starting low and moving up 2/300 Rpms or so between each run.

I typically had best results revving up to about 3kRPM right as I let out on the clutch. Just rev it up and let out on the clutch quickly. I never had much luck sidestepping the clutch. Usually just set the wipers off and spun, but didn't get to 60' any faster.

This was a GVR4 with small 16G and a few supporting mods(ACT2600). 1.78 60' on Kumho's was my best. Nothing special, but it was the stock 3-bolt rearend so don't flame me. :)

sorry guys didnt mean to be a dick... REALLY BAD DAY...
i usually launch around 4200 and slip the clutch quickly and give it gas at an equal rate. you'll get a feel for it sooner or later. awd launch=super fun

Dont flame me but I rev up to 5500-6000 and dump the bastard. I ran a 8.8 in the 1/8 with a t-25 and a 2600. I ran 8.556 with a 6 bolt 14b 680s and maft. But I will be learning over again now cause I know it wont take more than what Ive done already.
But it worked when I was mostly stock.

From Previous posts i think it was mostly agreed on to launch an AWD at 4,000 RPM
Pushing on the gas, and letting the clutch out in equal amounts.

that is how i always launch and seems to work good

AWD launches are what makes you addicted :thumb:

I rev up to 4-4500 rpms dump the clutch. I run stock everything besides whats in my profle. One thing don t launch a AWD DSM unless you are willing to fix what you break in the process. Good luck :thumb: just my 2 cents

5k rpm on my studderbox, slip the clutch out quick enough to not burn it up, but slow enough to not bog the engine down. Reach the 60' and shift. I pull 1.7x's every time a few 1.6's if I do it perfect. I'm not sure if this is archived on this forum but a lot of people have answered this question, I even think it is on Buschur's website.

I did a search but I came up with nothing usefull. Most (if not all) of the answers were kinda sorta crap. I am sorry if I missed somthing thoug. I know it can be fustrating when a newb comes in and asks the some old shit, just a different day. :talon:

The proper answer was the first one.

Launching breaks things. Enjoy it if you can afford it.

Meanwhile, refer to any earlier "How do I launch" thread.

tach it up to 4k and feather the clutch out - wear the clutch out instead of snaping axels and exploding diffs

Just slip it till the clutch eventually breaks, and replace it with one that will hold up better to the abuse. If your going to break a part in the drivetrain, break the clutch. However, ive never had a problem with breaking anything while launching. Im sure it wears the clutch some, but why did you buy awd? USE IT!

what were your 60 foots?

Anyway, replacing a clutch disk is so much cheaper than a transmission. Slip it out.

Launch in the wet or on gravel/mud/dirt/anything but dry pavement first.

my talon my best launches were at 4500 and dumping it... my 2.5L subaru redlines at 6 and thats what I dump it at... (upgraded clutch/fidanza flywheel takes the beating well.. .even with a shity suby tranny I still pull 13 second run's 60 foot times... even though I run 15's :p

I can basically keep up with most 13-14 second cars until 3rd then I start lagging like a lil na bi*** :D

What were the 60 foot numbers?

Rev up to 5500 and slowly slip out. Works good. New tires+ 2600+ lightened flywheel = good launch.

My Talon's best 60 foot was a 1.7x (13psi)... but thats before I had it tuned in and dialed at 20psi. never got it to the track after it was tuned, Also I had learned how to launch better and had crappy hard bald all seasons too!

my Subaru Could probably pull the same or so. It's got a shit ton of TQ and only 2700 pounds

Stutterbox at 5,500rpm, quick clutch slip, then I just hold on. :thumb: My best 60 to date is a 1.72 on a weak clutch.

Exactly what does a stutterbox do ? Gives you boost right off the jump?

MrPikolo

My best 60ft this past summer was 1.694
Out of 7 runs I had 4 in the 1.7s 1 in the 1.8s and 1 in the 1.9s

I live 41/2 hrs to the nearest track so I dont get to go very often Iwe have a 1/8 mile race weekend in June so thats the only time I beat my car really hard. On the street I rarely launch higher than 4500. I agree though I have to start slipping the clutch just like the old Shelby Z Days

My car= high milage. 150k.

I always think it's gonna break when I launch.

ACT 2100+6000rpms+quick release(not dump bet let it out quick)=1.76 60' with a 14.4ET. That's a good 60' if you ask me and my car holds up great. I actually spin all 4 tires a little on my launch, just enough to keep the rpms above 4800 or so throughout the very beginning of first.
